Green Pool Recovery: Your Day-by-Day SLAM Plan

Calculate your shock level, log every test, and know exactly when you're done.

Track your SLAM in Skimmer

A SLAM means testing several times a day. Skimmer logs each test and dose, so you can see the moment FC drops toward your 14 ppm floor, and keeps the before-and-after record.

Logging on paper? Skimmer charts your FC loss between tests so you can see when the overnight loss test passes.

The plan

  1. 1Day 0: Test CYA and pH. Lower pH to about 7.2 so chlorine works harder. Brush everything.
  2. 2Day 0: Raise free chlorine to your SLAM level (40% of CYA) and hold it.
  3. 3Run the filter 24/7. Clean or backwash when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi.
  4. 4Test at least 3 times a day and top FC back up to target every time it drops.
  5. 5Days 1 to 3: Keep brushing; the water goes green, then blue-cloudy, then clear.
  6. 6Confirm done with all three checks below.
  7. 7Let FC fall back to normal for your CYA and resume your routine.

Am I done? All three must pass

  • The water is clear: you can see the main drain
  • Combined chlorine is 0.5 ppm or less
  • Overnight chlorine loss test: FC drops 1 ppm or less from dusk to dawn

Note: Overnight chlorine loss test (OCLT): test FC after sunset, test again before sunrise. With no sun, any drop over 1 ppm means something (usually algae) is still eating chlorine.

Still green after shocking?

CauseFix
FC dropped between dosesTest and top up more often. Holding the level is the whole method.
CYA too high (over 80)SLAM level becomes huge. Partial drain first, then SLAM.
Filter can't keep upClean the cartridge or backwash; recharge DE. Check the pump runs 24/7.
Phosphates or algaecide mythsNeither clears algae. Chlorine at SLAM level does.
Mustard or black algaeBrush hard daily, wash tools and toys, and expect it to take longer.
Don't buy (yet)

Algaecide and flocculant are optional. Algaecide prevents but does not kill a bloom fast, and flocculant forces you to vacuum to waste. Chlorine, a brush and a running filter clear a green pool.

Frequently asked

Green pool recovery: questions

How long does it take to clear a green pool?
Usually 3 to 7 days for light to dark green, and 1 to 2 weeks for a swamp. It depends on holding SLAM level the whole time and on your filter.
Can I swim during SLAM?
Not at SLAM levels. Wait until the water is clear and free chlorine is back under about 10 ppm.
How much shock does a green pool need?
Enough to reach 40% of your CYA and to keep topping it up. At CYA 40 that is 16 ppm, which is about 1.9 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine in 15,000 gallons for the first dose.
Should I drain a green pool?
Usually not. Draining risks damage and you would refill with unbalanced water. The exception is CYA over about 80, where a partial drain makes SLAM practical.
Why did my pool turn green overnight?
Chlorine ran out. Heat, a storm, heavy swimming or a missed dose can drop FC to zero, and algae takes off within a day.
Is algaecide necessary?
No. It can help prevent a repeat once the water is clear, but it is not what clears a green pool.
