A green pool looks like a disaster, but it's almost always fixable at home, typically over a few days to about two weeks, not months. The color is algae, not damage, and algae responds predictably to the same three things every time: enough chlorine to overwhelm it, enough filtration to physically pull it out of the water, and enough brushing to keep it from resettling on the walls and floor. Why the water turned green
Algae spores are present in pool water in small amounts essentially all the time. They only bloom into a visible green cloud when something lets them get ahead of your sanitizer: a chlorine reading that sat near zero for a few days while the pool was unattended, a pump that stopped running, heavy rain that diluted the water, or cyanuric acid that crept high enough to weaken how effectively chlorine works. Once algae gets a foothold, it multiplies quickly and consumes free chlorine as fast as you can add it, which is why a single normal-sized dose never seems to touch a green pool. Recovery is less about one big fix and more about staying ahead of the algae for several days in a row.
The shock, filter, brush cycle
- Shock aggressively, and expect to repeat it. A standard maintenance dose won't make a dent in an established bloom. Many pool professionals recommend shocking at or above the higher end of what a normal chlorine calculator suggests, then retesting free chlorine every few hours and re-dosing as it gets consumed. As a rough reference point, about 1 gallon of roughly 12.5% liquid chlorine raises about 10,000 gallons of water by roughly 10 ppm free chlorine, scaled to your pool's volume and current reading. - Run the filter around the clock. Circulation is what actually carries dead algae to the filter media, so the pump should run continuously, 24 hours a day, until the water clears, not on its normal 8-12 hour daily schedule.
- Brush every surface daily. Dead and dying algae settles on walls, steps, and the floor, where it's partly shielded from chlorine and can reseed the water overnight. Brushing knocks it back into suspension so the filter can capture it, and skipping even one day tends to stall progress.
- Backwash or clean the filter as pressure climbs. A filter working this hard clogs faster than usual. Check the pressure gauge daily and clean or backwash once it rises 8-10 PSI above its normal baseline, otherwise circulation quietly drops off right when you need it most.

Note: There's no shortcut that beats time here. Dumping in one massive dose of chlorine all at once doesn't clear a pool faster than steady, repeated doses, and it often wastes chemical since a heavy bloom will consume it within hours regardless of how much you add. If chlorine won't hold above zero after two or three days of consistent shocking, check cyanuric acid: a level above the 20-80 ppm acceptable range can make chlorine noticeably less effective, and partially draining and refilling to dilute it may be what actually lets the shock catch up. A very dark, swamp-like pool with heavy debris is also more of a job for a pool service than a light green haze is, and there's no shame in calling one.
Before anyone swims, look for two things, not just clear-looking water. First, free chlorine should hold a stable reading in the normal 1-3 ppm ideal range (1-4 ppm acceptable) for at least 24 hours without crashing back toward zero. Second, combined chlorine, the byproduct that forms while chlorine is actively fighting off contamination, should read at or near 0 ppm (0-0.5 ppm acceptable). Water that looks clear but still shows elevated combined chlorine usually means the algae isn't fully dead, just invisible again for now.
