Pool Closing & Winterizing Checklist
Close it right so opening is easy, and freeze damage never happens.
Closing sequence
- 1Balance the water (pH, alkalinity, calcium) a few days before
- 2Deep-clean: brush, vacuum, and skim
- 3Lower water below the skimmer / returns (freeze-climate)
- 4Blow out and plug lines; add pool antifreeze where directed
- 5Remove, dry, and store baskets and removable equipment
- 6Add winterizing shock and algaecide as your routine calls for
- 7Cover securely and note the closing date in your log
Note: In freeze climates, water left in plumbing is the main cause of expensive cracks. If you are unsure about blowing out lines, this is a good one to have a pro do the first year.
