Hot & Arid

Covers the desert Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico), defined by low humidity, intense sun, and wide day-to-night temperature swings. Pool season runs nearly year-round in the lowest-elevation cities, and heating can extend swimmable months even further. The #1 maintenance consideration is evaporation and water loss: dry air and high heat pull water down fast, so refill frequency and water cost matter more here than in almost any other zone.

Hot & Humid

Covers the Gulf Coast and humid Southeast, plus Hawaii, where heat and moisture combine to create near-constant algae and bacterial growth pressure. Pool season stretches from a solid 7-8 months at the zone's northern edge to genuinely year-round in Florida, coastal Texas, and Hawaii. The #1 maintenance consideration is staying ahead of algae and organic contamination, since warm, humid air and frequent heavy rain keep chlorine demand high and dilute chemistry after storms.

Mild & Mediterranean

Covers the Pacific Coast states, ranging from Southern California's dry, sunny, near-year-round warmth to the Pacific Northwest's cooler, cloudier, rain-driven mild seasons. Season length varies more within this zone than any other: effectively year-round with heating in Southern California, but a compact 5-6 months in Oregon and Washington. The #1 maintenance consideration is that regional variation itself: what counts as normal pool care differs sharply between coastal Southern California and the cool-summer, rainy Pacific Northwest.

Temperate / Four-Season

Covers the mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley states, where all four seasons are distinct but winters are moderate rather than brutal. Pool season is a clear 4-6 month window, generally April or May through September, bookended by real spring-opening and fall-closing rituals. The #1 maintenance consideration is the seasonal transition itself: proper opening and closing procedures, plus winterizing exposed plumbing, matter far more here than in warmer zones.

Cold & Freeze

Covers the Northeast, the industrial Midwest, and the Mountain states, where winters bring hard, reliable freezes and pool season compresses to a firm summer window. Most owners work within roughly a Memorial-Day-to-Labor-Day rhythm, about 4-5 months, with real risk of freeze damage to any plumbing left unprotected. The #1 maintenance consideration is thorough winterization: blowing out lines and protecting equipment against a hard freeze isn't optional, it's the difference between a pool that survives winter and one that needs expensive spring repairs.

Short-Season & Extreme Cold

In-ground pool ownership is genuinely uncommon across much of this zone; where pools exist at all, above-ground and seasonal installs are common alternatives to a full in-ground build.
