Pool Chemical Storage & Safety
What to store where, and what never to mix.
Never mix
- Chlorine products with acid, this releases toxic chlorine gas.
- Different chlorine types with each other (e.g. cal-hypo and trichlor).
- Any pool chemical with household cleaners, ammonia, or solvents.
- Never add water to chemicals, add chemicals to water.
Safe storage
- Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place out of direct sun
- Keep every product in its original, labeled container
- Separate oxidizers (chlorine) from acids with real distance
- Keep sealed and up high, away from kids and pets
- Never stack acid above chlorine or vice versa
Handling
- Add chemicals with the pump running, one at a time
- Wait between different chemicals; don't combine in the skimmer
- Wear eye protection and gloves; measure, don't eyeball
- Follow the product label, it overrides any general rule
