How to DIY Your Pool Maintenance: The Complete Owner's Guide

The five jobs that make up all pool maintenance

Everything you'll ever do to a pool falls into one of five buckets. Once you see the whole job this way, the endless-seeming list of pool tasks collapses into something you can actually manage in a few minutes a week.

  • Test the water. You can't manage what you don't measure. A weekly test of pH, free chlorine, and alkalinity is the single most important habit in pool care.
  • Balance the chemistry. Add the small number of chemicals that bring your readings back into range: sanitizer, pH adjusters, alkalinity, and the occasional shock.
  • Circulate and filter. Run the pump enough hours a day to turn the water over, and keep the filter clean so it can actually catch what's in the water.
  • Clean the surfaces. Skim, brush, and vacuum so debris and early algae never get a foothold.

Before anything else: know your pool's volume

Every chemical dose you'll ever calculate starts from one number: how many gallons your pool holds. Get this right once and every adjustment afterward is accurate; guess at it and every dose is a guess too. Job 1: Testing your water

Testing is the foundation because every other decision depends on it. For a typical residential pool, test pH and free chlorine two to three times a week in season, total alkalinity weekly, and calcium hardness plus cyanuric acid monthly (those drift slowly). Job 2: Balancing the chemistry

This is the part that intimidates new owners and it's genuinely the smallest job once you know the targets. There are only a handful of numbers that matter, and each one has a clear range to aim for. Here's the whole chart.

The order you fix things in matters. Adjust total alkalinity first, because it buffers pH and keeps it from swinging every time you add a chemical. Then set pH, then chlorine. If pH refuses to hold no matter how carefully you dose, the culprit is almost always alkalinity, not pH itself. Job 3: Circulation and filtration

Chemistry only works if the water is moving. The pump's job is to turn over the entire volume of the pool, ideally at least once a day, which for most residential pools means running it roughly 8 to 12 hours daily in season. The filter is what actually clears the water, and it only works when it's clean. Job 4: Cleaning the surfaces

Physical cleaning does two things chemistry can't: it removes the debris that feeds algae and consumes chlorine, and brushing physically disrupts algae before it becomes visible. The weekly rhythm is simple.

  • Skim the surface of leaves and debris every day or two, before it sinks and becomes harder to remove.
