A Pool Maintenance Schedule for Every Season
What actually changes in your pool routine from spring opening through winter shutdown, and why the same weekly checklist doesn't work year-round.

In practice, a pool in July and the same pool in November are basically two different jobs. Spring: opening and ramping up
Spring is the highest-effort season because you're bringing a pool back from a dormant or lightly maintained state. Even if you kept the pump running through winter, the water chemistry has likely drifted, and it's worth a full reset before the first swim.
- Remove and clean the winter cover if you used one, then give the pool a thorough test: pH, free chlorine, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid at minimum.
- Expect to shock the pool at opening. Cloudy or slightly green water after months of reduced circulation is common and usually clears within a day or two of proper shocking and filtration, not a sign anything is seriously wrong.
- Inspect the pump, filter, and any heater for winter damage: cracked housings, debris in the pump basket, or anything that looks like it froze and cracked over the off season.
- Backwash or clean the filter before you need it, not after the water's already cloudy.
- Restart your regular circulation schedule, generally 8 to 12 hours a day, and increase it in the first week or two while the water stabilizes.
Summer: the maintenance-intensive stretch
Summer is when the pool sees the most use and the water chemistry moves the fastest, so this is the season where a weekly-only routine tends to fall short. Heat accelerates chlorine loss and algae growth, and heavy bather load adds contaminants that a spring-level testing cadence won't catch in time.
- Test water at least twice a week, more often during heat waves or after parties, pool days, or heavy rain.
- Skim and check the skimmer basket almost daily; leaves, bugs, and sunscreen residue accumulate fast when the pool is used often.
- Brush walls and steps weekly to prevent algae from getting a foothold, especially in shaded corners and behind ladders.
- Watch cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels if you're using stabilized chlorine tablets regularly. It's a slow to notice drift, and letting it climb above 80 ppm makes your chlorine less effective at killing off contaminants.
- Check the filter pressure gauge weekly and clean or backwash when it climbs 8 to 10 PSI above its freshly cleaned baseline.

Fall: tapering off without letting things slide
Fall is a transition, and it's the season people most often under-maintain, because the pool feels less urgent once the heat wave pressure is gone. That's exactly when leaf drop and cooling water temperatures create their own problems if ignored.
- Step testing back down to weekly as bather load and temperatures drop, unless you're in a region with a long, hot fall.
- Increase skimming frequency if you have deciduous trees nearby. Leaf litter that sinks and decomposes is one of the more common causes of a stubborn algae bloom later on.
- Start reducing pump run time gradually as water temperature drops, rather than cutting it abruptly, so chemistry has time to keep up with the new circulation rate.
- If you're closing for winter, this is the season to schedule it: plan the closing before the first hard freeze in your area, not after.
Winter: closing, or minimal upkeep if you stay open
What winter looks like depends entirely on climate. In freeze-prone regions, this is a closing and near-dormant season. In warm climates, it's simply the lightest-use stretch of an otherwise year-round pool.
- If closing: balance the water one last time, add a winterizing chemical kit if your pool type calls for one, lower the water level if required for your cover type, and protect equipment from freezing (many pool professionals recommend draining or blowing out lines in hard-freeze climates).
- If closing: install a winter cover and check on it periodically through the season, clearing standing water or heavy debris rather than leaving it to accumulate.
- If staying open through a mild winter: reduce testing to every one to two weeks, keep circulation running enough to prevent stagnation, and don't assume low use means low risk, algae can still take hold in cooler, sunlit water.
- Either way, this is a good season to do the equipment checks that get skipped during busy months: inspect the heater, service the pump and motor, and clean a salt cell if you have a saltwater system.
