How to Choose a Robotic Pool Cleaner: A Buying Guide

Robotic pool cleaners have become the default recommendation for a reason: they're largely self-contained, they generally clean better than older suction or pressure-side units, and they take one more chore off your weekly list. But the category is crowded, prices swing widely for reasons that aren't always obvious on a product page, and most buying guides just rank a handful of models that will be discontinued or repriced within a year anyway. This one won't do that. Instead, it's a checklist of the features that actually matter, so you can evaluate whatever's on the shelf, or on a retailer's website, when you're ready to buy, whether that's this season or three years from now.
Robotic vs. suction and pressure-side cleaners
There are three broad categories of automatic pool cleaner, and it helps to know where robotic units fit before you start comparing features. Suction-side cleaners connect to your skimmer or a dedicated suction line and rely on your pool's main pump to create movement, which means they add load to a pump that's already running and generally don't filter debris on their own, since whatever they pick up passes through your main filter instead. Pressure-side cleaners connect to a return line, sometimes with their own booster pump, and use water pressure to move around and fill a separate debris bag, which keeps larger particles out of your main filter but usually still requires decent pump pressure to work well. - Noise and cleaning time: cycle length varies by model and pool size, generally landing somewhere between one and three hours for a full clean, and some units run noticeably quieter than others, which matters if you'll be running it during the day near a patio.
