Sand vs. Cartridge vs. DE Filter: Which Is Right for Your Pool?
A practical comparison of the three residential pool filter types, what each actually costs to run and maintain, and how to tell which one you already have.
If you didn't pick your pool's filter yourself, chances are you've never had a reason to think about it until now. Filters are the least glamorous piece of pool equipment and also one of the most important: they're what keeps the water clear between chemical doses. There are three types you'll find on a residential pad, sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE), and the differences between them matter more for your weekly routine than most people expect.
How to tell which one you have
Before comparing them, it helps to know which tank is sitting on your equipment pad right now. All three usually look like a large cylindrical or oval tank plumbed into the pump line, but a few details give them away.
- Sand filter: a single tank, usually the largest and least tapered, with a multiport valve on top (a lever with labeled positions like Filter, Backwash, Rinse, Waste). No visible cartridge or grid inside; it's filled with filter sand you never see.
- Cartridge filter: a tank you can open by hand (often with a wing-nut or clamp band) to lift out a pleated fabric cartridge that looks like a large air filter. No multiport valve needed since there's nothing to backwash.
- DE filter: similar tank shape to a sand filter, also with a multiport valve, but inside are fabric-covered grids coated in diatomaceous earth powder. If you've ever had to add a chalky white powder through the skimmer after cleaning the filter, that's DE.

What actually differs between the three
All three filter types do the same basic job: pull water through a filtering medium and trap particles before the water returns to the pool. Where they differ is filtration fineness, how you clean them, and what cleaning actually costs you in time, water, and recurring purchases.
Sand filters
Sand filters are the simplest and generally the cheapest to own long-term. They filter down to roughly 20-40 microns, which is the coarsest of the three, meaning very fine particles can pass through and contribute to slightly hazier water over time. Maintenance is a lever pull: you backwash by reversing water flow to flush trapped debris out to waste, then rinse before returning to normal filtration. There's no cartridge to buy and no powder to add. The sand itself typically lasts several years before it needs replacing, and the tradeoff for that low-maintenance simplicity is the least fine filtration of the three.
Cartridge filters
Cartridge filters land in the middle on filtration quality, typically 10-20 microns, and they have a real advantage: cleaning them doesn't waste any pool water. You pull the cartridge, hose it off (or soak it in a cartridge cleaning solution for a deeper clean), and put it back. No backwash cycle, no water down the drain. The tradeoff is that cartridges wear out and need periodic replacement, typically every couple of years with normal use, which is a recurring cost sand and DE owners don't have in quite the same way.
DE filters
DE filters give you the finest filtration of the three, often down to 2-5 microns, which is why pool professionals sometimes describe DE-filtered water as the clearest of the three options. That fine filtration comes with the most hands-on maintenance: you backwash like a sand filter, then have to recharge the grids with fresh DE powder afterward, added through the skimmer. DE filters are also the most sensitive to disposal rules in some areas, since backwash water carries DE powder that a few municipalities restrict from going down a storm drain. It's worth a quick check of your local rules if you're not sure, since this varies by location and isn't something we'd want to guess at for you.

None of these is objectively "best," they're a set of tradeoffs. If you want the least hands-on system and don't mind slightly less fine filtration, sand is the easy choice. If you're in a drought-prone area or on a well and want to avoid wasting water on every cleaning, cartridge is worth the periodic replacement cost. If you want the clearest possible water and don't mind the extra steps, DE delivers it, as long as you're comfortable with the recharge routine and any local disposal considerations.
Keeping up with cleaning, whichever type you have
Whatever filter you have, the real maintenance driver isn't the type, it's the pressure gauge on top of the tank. Note the pressure right after a fresh cleaning; that's your baseline. When the gauge climbs roughly 8-10 PSI above that baseline, it's time to backwash or clean, regardless of what the calendar says. A filter that's overdue for cleaning makes your pump work harder and can let more debris recirculate, which shows up as chemistry that seems to drift even when your dosing routine hasn't changed.
As a starting point if you don't have a pressure history yet, many pool owners check filter pressure roughly every two weeks and plan on backwashing a sand or DE filter, or cleaning a cartridge, about once a month, adjusting more often during heavy pool use or after a storm.
