Understanding Your Pool Equipment Pad: What Everything Does

A labeled walkthrough of what's actually on your pool equipment pad, so you can look at the pump, filter, heater, and valves and know what each one is doing.

Every pool has one corner of the yard that looks like a small mechanical room: a maze of gray PVC pipe, a humming motor, a tank-shaped object, and a handful of handles nobody ever explained to you. That's the equipment pad, and it's less complicated than it looks. Almost every residential pool pad is doing the same handful of jobs: move the water, clean the water, sometimes heat the water, and route the water where it needs to go. Once you can point at the piece doing each job, the whole pad stops being a mystery.

The pump and filter: the two that never stop

The pump and filter work as a pair, and they're usually the two pieces running whenever the system is on. The pump is the motor with the see-through lid; open that lid and you'll find a basket that catches leaves and debris before they can reach the impeller. A steady hum while it's running is completely normal. Grinding, screeching, or a rattling noise usually isn't, and is worth looking into before it gets worse. Downstream of the pump sits the filter, typically the largest object on the pad. It has a pressure gauge on top; note the reading right after you clean or backwash it, that's your baseline. When the pressure climbs 8-10 PSI above that baseline, it's time to clean or backwash again.

  • Cartridge filters: a canister you unscrew or unclip, then hose off the pleated cartridge inside. No backwashing involved. Cartridges typically need replacing every year or two, depending on use.
  • Sand filters: a large tank filled with filter sand. You clean these by backwashing, reversing water flow through the multiport valve to flush trapped debris out a waste line. The sand itself typically lasts several years before it needs replacing.
  • DE (diatomaceous earth) filters: similar to sand filters but use a fine powder coating on internal grids for the finest filtration. They also backwash, and you'll need to add fresh DE powder back into the skimmer afterward.

Valves, the heater, and everything else on the pad

If the pool has a sand or DE filter, it almost certainly has a multiport valve on top: one handle with several labeled positions like Filter, Backwash, Rinse, Waste, Recirculate, and Closed. Day to day, it should stay on Filter; the handle only moves when it's time to backwash or clean. Always switch the pump off before turning a multiport valve, turning it while the pump is running can damage the internal parts. Elsewhere on the pad there may be smaller two-way or three-way valves, often used to divert water to a spa, a water feature, or a second suction line. If there's a heater, it usually looks like a small furnace (gas heaters) or a unit with a visible fan (heat pumps). Heaters sit downstream of the filter, so they only warm water that's already been cleaned, and they're generally the last piece of equipment new owners need to think about.

Depending on the pool, the pad can include a few more pieces worth recognizing on sight: a salt chlorinator cell if it's a saltwater pool, an automation controller or timer that schedules when the pump runs, a small transformer box for pool lighting, or a motor for an automatic cover. None of these need daily attention, but knowing what they are means a stopped timer or an unfamiliar box doesn't feel like an emergency.

Note: You don't need to memorize every valve position today. Leave anything you don't recognize alone, and if a handle feels stuck or you're not sure what it controls, that's a good five-minute question for a pool professional rather than something to force.

A five-minute walkthrough you can do this weekend

  • Find the main equipment shutoff or breaker, so you know how to cut power in an emergency.
  • Note the current pump run schedule on the timer or automation controller.
  • Write down the filter pressure gauge reading right after it's been cleaned, that's your baseline for future backwashing.
  • Look for puddles, drips, or corrosion around fittings and valves; a small leak is much cheaper to fix early than late.

How do I tell if I have a sand, cartridge, or DE filter?
Look at the tank on the pad. A cartridge filter is usually a shorter, wider canister you unscrew or unclip by hand, with no backwash handle. A sand filter is a taller cylinder topped with a multiport valve that has a single handle and several labeled positions. A DE filter looks similar to a sand filter but often has a smaller grid manifold inside, and it also uses a multiport valve for backwashing.
What are the positions on a multiport valve for?
Filter is the everyday setting: water runs through the filter media and back to the pool. Backwash and Rinse are used together to clean a sand or DE filter. Waste sends water straight to a drain, useful for lowering the water level. Recirculate bypasses the filter entirely, and Closed shuts off flow. Leave it on Filter unless you're actively cleaning the filter.
Is it normal for the pump to be loud?
A steady hum or whir while the pump is running is normal. Grinding, screeching, or a rattling noise usually isn't, and often points to a worn bearing or something caught in the impeller. It's worth having it looked at before it fails outright, but it's rarely an emergency.
My equipment pad doesn't have a heater or a salt chlorinator, is that a problem?
Not at all. Plenty of pools, especially in warm climates, skip a heater entirely, and many pools use manually added chlorine tablets, liquid, or granules instead of a salt chlorinator. Neither one is required for a pool to run well.
