How to Lower Pool pH Safely
High pH scales your equipment and eats up your chlorine's effectiveness. Here's how to bring it back down with muriatic acid or dry acid, without overcorrecting.
A high pH reading isn't an emergency, but it's worth fixing promptly. When pH climbs above the acceptable range, your chlorine works harder to do less, your water can turn cloudy, and scale starts forming on tile and equipment. The fix is straightforward: add an acid, let it circulate, and retest. The part people get wrong is usually the dosing, not the chemistry.
Why pH creeps up in the first place
pH drifts upward for a few common reasons: aeration from waterfalls, spillways, or a bubbling return jet, fresh fill water that's naturally alkaline, high total alkalinity pulling pH up with it over time, and some chlorine products (like cal-hypo or liquid chlorine) that are inherently basic and nudge pH higher with every dose. None of that is a problem you did wrong, it's just normal water chemistry. The target is the ideal range of 7.4 to 7.6, with 7.2 to 7.8 considered acceptable before it's worth correcting.
Note: If your total alkalinity is also high (above 120 ppm), expect pH to keep drifting back up after you lower it. High alkalinity acts as a buffer that resists pH changes, so you may need to bring alkalinity down first, or in tandem, for a lasting fix.
Muriatic acid vs. dry acid
Both products lower pH by adding acid to the water. The choice mostly comes down to handling preference, storage, and how they affect total alkalinity along the way.

Neither product is objectively "better," pool professionals use both. If you're not comfortable handling a splashing liquid acid, dry acid is the more forgiving choice to keep on a shelf, even though it costs a bit more.
How much to add
These are standard, widely-published pool-industry rule-of-thumb dosing figures, treat them as a starting estimate, not an exact prescription, since your total alkalinity and pool geometry affect the real result.
- Muriatic acid (about 31.45% concentration, typical retail strength): roughly 1 quart (32 oz) per 10,000 gallons lowers pH by about 0.2.
- Dry acid (sodium bisulfate): roughly 1.5 lb per 10,000 gallons lowers pH by about 0.2.
- If your product's concentration differs from the standard 31.45% muriatic acid, check the label, a weaker solution needs proportionally more to hit the same drop.
- Never guess your pool's gallons, an inaccurate volume throws off every dose that follows. Skimmer's pool volume and pH calculators can work this out for you from your pool's shape and dimensions.
Note: Add acid gradually and never dump a full calculated dose in one shot if you're more than about 0.4 off target. Add roughly half, circulate for at least a few hours (ideally overnight), and retest before adding more. Overcorrecting pH low is just as common a mistake as letting it run high.
How to add it safely
- Always add acid to water, never water to acid, when pre-diluting muriatic acid in a bucket. Adding water to concentrated acid can cause it to splash or spatter.
- Wear safety goggles and chemical-resistant gloves. Muriatic acid fumes and splashes can burn skin and eyes.
- Add slowly, in a well-ventilated outdoor area, walking around the pool's edge rather than pouring from one spot. Pouring near a return jet or in front of a skimmer helps it disperse rather than pooling on the bottom.
- Keep the pump running during and after dosing so the acid circulates and mixes evenly instead of settling and etching the plaster or liner in one spot.
- Store muriatic acid away from chlorine products. If the two ever mix, they release toxic chlorine gas. Keep them in separate containers, on separate shelves, ideally in separate storage areas entirely.
- Never mix dry acid and liquid acid together, and never combine leftover acid from different container brands without checking labels.
After you dose: what to expect
pH doesn't move instantly. Give the water at least a few hours of circulation, many pool professionals recommend waiting overnight before retesting, especially for larger doses. Retest with a liquid kit if you have one; test strips are fine for routine checks but are less precise right at the boundary between acceptable and out of range. If the pool is still high after a full circulation cycle, add the remaining half of your calculated dose rather than a fresh full dose.
If pH keeps bouncing back up within a day or two even after a correct dose, that's usually a sign your total alkalinity is elevated and acting as a buffer, or that something in the pool (a new water feature, heavy aeration, fresh fill water) is actively pushing it upward. Chasing pH alone in that situation usually means repeating the same dose every few days. It's worth testing and addressing total alkalinity at the same time.
