  • Adjust chemistry based on the reading: add chlorine, adjust pH, or add alkalinity increaser as needed, then note the dose so you can track what worked.
  • Brush the walls, steps, and any corners where circulation is weak. This physically breaks up the early stage of algae growth before it becomes visible.
  • Empty the skimmer and pump baskets, even if they don't look full. A partially clogged basket quietly reduces flow all week.
  • Vacuum or run the robotic cleaner if debris has settled on the floor.
  • Check the filter pressure gauge against your clean baseline reading. If it's climbed 8-10 PSI, it's time to backwash or clean the cartridge.
  • Do a quick visual equipment check: listen for unusual pump noise, glance at visible plumbing for drips, confirm the pump is running on its normal schedule.

If a reading is off, adjust the biggest lever first. Total alkalinity affects how stable pH is, so fixing alkalinity often makes pH easier to hold in range the following week. As a general rule of thumb, one gallon of about 12.5% liquid chlorine raises roughly 10,000 gallons of water by about 10 ppm free chlorine, scaled up or down for your pool's actual volume.   • Inspect the filter more closely, look inside the tank if it's a cartridge or DE filter, and clean or replace media if it's due.
  • Check for scale, staining, or rough spots on the plaster or tile line, small issues are far cheaper to address early.
  • Review whether the pump run schedule still matches the season. Hotter months generally call for more circulation time.

The most common reason a weekly routine slips isn't forgetting, it's not having what you need within reach when the reminder pops up. Keep a small kit near the equipment pad or in a garage shelf close to the pool: a fresh box of test strips or a liquid test kit with reagents that haven't expired, whichever sanitizer you normally dose with, a pH increaser and decreaser, alkalinity increaser, and a pool brush sized to your pool's finish. None of this needs to be elaborate. It just needs to be there so the weekly check takes minutes instead of turning into a trip to the pool store first.
