What Pool Chemicals Do You Actually Need to Own?

A starter shopping list for new pool owners: the five chemical categories every pool needs, what's optional, and what to skip until you actually have a problem.

Walk down a pool store's chemical aisle for the first time and it feels less like shopping and more like standing in front of a wall of unlabeled decisions: a dozen kinds of chlorine, three different pH products, clarifiers, algaecides, stain removers, and shelf after shelf of things you've never heard of. The good news is that almost none of that wall is required. Nearly every pool, no matter the type, only needs chemicals from five categories. Everything else is either optional, situational, or something you'll buy later if a specific problem shows up.

The five jobs every pool chemical does

Instead of memorizing product names, it helps to think in terms of jobs. Every chemical on the shelf exists to do one of these five things, and a starter pool only needs one product per job to get through its first season.

  • Sanitizer: kills bacteria and algae. This is the one non-negotiable category. For a standard pool that's chlorine, as tablets, liquid, or granular. For a saltwater pool, it's salt, which a chlorinator cell converts into chlorine automatically.
  • pH adjusters: keep the water in the 7.4-7.6 ideal range (7.2-7.8 is still acceptable) so the sanitizer can actually work. A pH increaser (usually soda ash) raises it; a pH decreaser (dry acid or muriatic acid) lowers it.
  • Alkalinity increaser: usually sodium bicarbonate, essentially baking soda. It buffers pH so it doesn't swing wildly every time you add another chemical. Ideal range is 80-120 ppm, acceptable is 60-120 ppm.
  • Stabilizer (cyanuric acid): shields chlorine from breaking down in sunlight. Ideal range is 30-50 ppm, acceptable is 20-80 ppm. Many pools never buy this as a standalone product because stabilized chlorine tablets already contain it.
  • Shock: an occasional, stronger dose used to clear out chloramines and contaminants that day-to-day sanitizing can't keep up with, not something you dose every day.

One extra category if you have a plaster or gunite pool

Plaster, gunite, and pebble surfaces are affected by calcium hardness, generally kept in the 200-400 ppm ideal range (150-400 ppm acceptable). If your water tests low on calcium, a calcium hardness increaser (calcium chloride) protects the surface from etching over time. Vinyl liner and fiberglass pools don't have a plaster surface to protect, so this one is usually skippable for those pool types.

Notice how few rows say "weekly" or more. Most of a starter chemical shelf is a small bottle bought once and used sparingly over months, not a recurring grocery list. Buying small quantities of each to start is usually smarter than buying the biggest jug on the shelf, since some of these lose potency in storage over time, especially liquid chlorine.

Testing supplies: not a chemical, but just as essential

None of the chemicals above are useful without knowing your starting numbers. Test strips are cheap, fast, and good enough for routine week-to-week checks. A liquid test kit (drop-based reagents) is more precise and worth having if you want to dial in pH and chlorine more carefully, but it isn't required to get started. Either way, testing before you dose is what turns "add some chlorine and hope" into an actual adjustment you can trust.

What you can skip for now

A lot of the remaining aisle is optional, situational, or a fix for a problem you don't have yet. Many pool professionals consider these worth buying only once a specific need shows up, not as part of a starter kit:

  • Algaecide: a preventive or corrective treatment for algae. If you don't have an algae problem and you're keeping sanitizer levels in range, you likely don't need it sitting on the shelf yet.
  • Clarifiers and flocculants: help settle out fine cloudiness. Useful for a specific cloudy-water episode, not a routine addition.
  • Phosphate removers: target phosphates that can feed algae growth. Worth considering only if you're fighting recurring algae despite balanced chlorine.
  • Stain and scale removers, enzyme or oil absorbers: address specific, visible problems (metal staining, scale buildup, body-oil film). Buy these when you actually see the problem, not preemptively.
  • Saltwater-specific conditioners beyond salt itself: most saltwater pools run fine on salt, pH adjusters, alkalinity increaser, and occasional shock, without extra additives.

Note: It's tempting to leave the pool store with one of everything, but a starter kit really is just chlorine, a pH increaser, a pH decreaser, alkalinity increaser, and a shock product, plus stabilizer or calcium hardness increaser only if your test results call for it. Saltwater pools: a shorter list, not a different one

Saltwater pools still use chlorine, they just generate most of it on-site through a salt chlorinator cell instead of you adding it by hand. That means salt replaces routine chlorine purchases, but pH adjusters, alkalinity increaser, and an occasional shock product for days the cell can't keep up (heavy bather load, a storm, an algae bloom) are still worth having on hand. Salt itself is added rarely, mostly after rain or a partial drain-and-refill dilutes the level below the 2,700-3,400 ppm ideal range.

Do I really need both a pH increaser and a pH decreaser?
Most pools drift consistently in one direction based on their water source and sanitizer type, so you may only reach for one of the two regularly. Still, it's worth having both on hand from the start since a pool's tendency can change with the seasons, a water refill, or a switch in chlorine product.
Is pool shock a different chemical than my regular chlorine?
Shock is typically a stronger, fast-dissolving form of chlorine (like cal-hypo or dichlor) or a non-chlorine oxidizer, used occasionally to clear out chloramines rather than as your everyday sanitizer. A common rule of thumb is dosing to roughly 10 times your combined chlorine reading, with a standard minimum shock dose even when combined chlorine tests low. That's an estimate, not an exact figure, so retest after dosing rather than assuming it landed exactly on target.
If I use chlorine tablets, do I still need to buy cyanuric acid separately?
Usually not. Standard chlorine tablets (trichlor) already contain stabilizer, so adding cyanuric acid on top can push your levels above the 20-80 ppm acceptable range over time. Standalone cyanuric acid is mainly for pools using unstabilized liquid chlorine, which has none built in.
Should I buy liquid chlorine or chlorine tablets for a new pool?
Both work, and the choice mostly comes down to your equipment and preference. Tablets sit in a floater or feeder and dissolve gradually with less frequent handling, while liquid chlorine is added manually or through a feed pump and doesn't add cyanuric acid to your water. Many new owners start with whichever their previous owner or local pool store already used, since equipment (feeders, floaters) may already be set up for it.
Do saltwater pool owners ever need to buy actual chlorine?
Occasionally. A salt chlorinator generates chlorine steadily, but it can struggle to keep up after heavy swimming, a storm, or an algae bloom. Keeping a small amount of shock on hand for those moments is common, even though day-to-day sanitizing comes from the salt cell.
