How Often Should You Test Pool Water?

The baseline: once a week, year-round
If you do nothing else, test your water once a week. That's the rhythm most pool professionals recommend for a residential pool that's circulating normally and not under unusual stress. A heavy storm can measurably shift more than one parameter overnight, which is different from the slow, single-parameter drift you'd catch on a normal weekly test.
- Light rain or a quick shower: no rush, your next scheduled test will catch it.
- A sustained downpour or storm that visibly raised the water level: test within a day, once it's safe to be at the pool.
- Heavy runoff carrying visible debris, mud, or leaves: test after skimming and vacuuming, since debris breaking down in the water will keep pulling chlorine down for a day or two.
After a big rain, expect to rebalance more than one thing at once, typically alkalinity and pH together, sometimes chlorine too. That's normal for diluted water, not a sign anything is broken. Retest 24 hours after any adjustment rather than dosing again the next day just because a number still looks slightly off; most chemicals need time to fully register.
