The honest answer is: it depends on the season, how much the pool gets used, and what just happened to it. But most pool owners don't need a complicated schedule, they need a baseline habit and three situations that bump that habit up temporarily. Here's the calm version.

The baseline: once a week, year-round

If you do nothing else, test your water once a week. That's the rhythm most pool professionals recommend for a residential pool that's circulating normally and not under unusual stress. Weekly testing catches slow drift, like alkalinity creeping down or cyanuric acid creeping up, before it turns into a bigger problem, without turning water testing into a daily chore.

Summer: test two to three times a week, or daily if the pool is busy

Chlorine gets consumed faster in summer for a few predictable reasons: more UV exposure breaks it down, warmer water accelerates chemical reactions and algae growth, and more swimmers means more sunscreen, sweat, and body oils for the sanitizer to work through. A pool that holds steady on a weekly test in April can swing noticeably between Tuesday and Friday in July.

  • Light use, home pool: test two to three times a week during peak summer.
  • Heavy use (frequent parties, kids in and out all day, a rental or shared pool): test daily, or at minimum before and after any big swim day.
  • Any pool without a stabilizer (cyanuric acid) or with an older, unshaded liner: lean toward the more frequent end, since unstabilized chlorine burns off in sunlight much faster.

After rain: test as soon as it's practical, not mid-storm

Rain dilutes your water, which lowers alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid all at once, and it can carry debris, dust, and organic matter into the pool that eats into your chlorine reserve. A heavy storm can measurably shift more than one parameter overnight, which is different from the slow, single-parameter drift you'd catch on a normal weekly test.

  • Light rain or a quick shower: no rush, your next scheduled test will catch it.
  • A sustained downpour or storm that visibly raised the water level: test within a day, once it's safe to be at the pool.
  • Heavy runoff carrying visible debris, mud, or leaves: test after skimming and vacuuming, since debris breaking down in the water will keep pulling chlorine down for a day or two.

After a big rain, expect to rebalance more than one thing at once, typically alkalinity and pH together, sometimes chlorine too. That's normal for diluted water, not a sign anything is broken. Retest 24 hours after any adjustment rather than dosing again the next day just because a number still looks slightly off; most chemicals need time to fully register.
