Why Does My Pool Smell Like Chlorine? (It's Not What You Think)

That sharp chemical smell almost always means your chlorine is used up, not overdosed. Here's what's actually happening in the water and how to fix it.

Walk up to a pool that reeks of chlorine and the instinct is to assume someone went overboard with the chemicals. It's the opposite. That sharp, eye-watering smell is almost always a sign your pool doesn't have enough active chlorine, not too much. Clean, properly sanitized pool water barely smells like anything at all.

The smell isn't chlorine, it's chloramines

Chlorine works by attaching itself to contaminants in the water: sweat, sunscreen, body oils, saliva, urine, dead skin. When it bonds with nitrogen-based compounds specifically, it forms a byproduct called chloramine (technically a group of compounds, but pool folks just say chloramines). Chloramines are weaker sanitizers than free chlorine, they're the ones giving off that strong, unpleasant odor, and they're the reason your eyes sting even though you're standing in a "chlorinated" pool.

So the smell you're noticing isn't fresh, active chlorine doing its job quietly in the background. It's spent chlorine, already used up fighting contaminants, now floating around as a weaker compound that irritates skin and eyes and smells strong precisely because it isn't sanitizing anything anymore.

Note: Rule of thumb: the stronger the chlorine smell, the less actual sanitizing power is left in your water. A pool with zero odor and clear water is usually the well-balanced one, not the under-treated one.

How to tell what's really going on

You can't tell chloramines from free chlorine by smell alone, but a test kit that measures both free chlorine and combined chlorine will settle it in under a minute. Free chlorine (FC) is the active, available sanitizer. Combined chlorine (CC) is the chloramine byproduct. Total chlorine is just the two added together.

If your combined chlorine reading is above roughly 0.5 ppm, that's your answer: chloramines have built up and it's time to shock the pool. If free chlorine is already within range and combined chlorine is at or near zero, the smell is probably coming from somewhere else entirely, more on that below.

Fixing it: breakpoint chlorination

The fix for a chloramine smell isn't to add less chlorine, it's to add a large, deliberate dose all at once, a process called breakpoint chlorination, or just "shocking" the pool. The goal is to push the chlorine level so high, briefly, that it overwhelms and burns off the chloramines entirely rather than adding a little more fuel to a smell that's already there.

  • A common rule of thumb: shock dose is roughly 10 times your combined chlorine reading, with a practical minimum shock of about 10 ppm free chlorine even if combined chlorine reads low.
  • For liquid chlorine (around 12.5% strength), that generally works out to about 1 gallon per 10,000 gallons of pool water for every 10 ppm you're raising the free chlorine level, scaled up or down for your pool's actual volume and product strength.
  • Cal-hypo granular shock (roughly 65% available chlorine) is typically dosed around 1 pound per 10,000 gallons for a similar 9-10 ppm rise, though this varies by brand, so check the product label.
  • Shock in the evening or after dark. Sunlight burns off unstabilized chlorine fast, and you want the high dose to have hours to work before UV starts eating into it.
  • Keep the pump running and let it circulate for several hours, ideally overnight, before retesting.

These are estimates based on standard, widely published dosing figures, not an exact prescription for your pool. Actual results vary by product concentration, water temperature, and total alkalinity, so always retest after dosing and add chemicals gradually rather than guessing at a bigger number because the smell hasn't cleared yet. Other things that make the smell worse

A few conditions make chloramine buildup more likely in the first place, which is worth knowing so the smell doesn't come right back a week later.

  • Heavy bather load: a pool party or several days of steady swimming introduces a lot of sweat, sunscreen, and body oils at once, which is exactly what feeds chloramine formation.
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) creeping too high: CYA protects chlorine from sunlight, but excessive levels can suppress how effectively chlorine actually sanitizes, generally recommended in the 30-50 ppm range and no higher than about 80 ppm.
  • Low free chlorine to begin with: if FC is already sitting near the bottom of the 1-4 ppm acceptable range, there's less spare capacity to handle a busy weekend before chloramines start building up.
  • Poor circulation: chlorine that isn't moving through the whole pool, dead corners, a short pump run time, isn't reaching every gallon evenly, so contaminants linger longer before they're neutralized.

When the smell isn't chloramines at all

If you've tested and free chlorine is in range while combined chlorine is near zero, but you're still noticing an odor, it's worth considering a few less common culprits: algaecide products (some have a noticeable chemical smell of their own), a recent shock treatment that hasn't fully off-gassed yet, or, less pleasantly, a source of contamination near the pool rather than in it. None of these are cause for alarm, they just mean the chloramine explanation doesn't fit and it's worth a closer look at what else changed recently.

No, that's the common misconception. A strong smell usually means your free chlorine is already used up and what's left is chloramines, a weaker byproduct. Adding a large shock dose all at once (breakpoint chlorination) burns off the chloramines; adding a small routine dose just gets consumed the same way and won't clear the smell.
How long after shocking will the chlorine smell go away?
