If that sounds familiar, you're probably not dealing with regular green algae, you're dealing with mustard algae, and it plays by different rules. The good news: it's beatable, it just needs a specific protocol instead of the usual "add some chlorine and wait" approach.

What makes mustard algae different

Mustard algae (sometimes called yellow algae) shows up as a yellowish-brown, sandy or dusty film, usually on shaded walls, in corners, and around steps, and it's notorious for brushing off easily and returning within a day. Two things set it apart from ordinary green algae: it tolerates normal chlorine levels far better, and it clings to pool equipment, toys, and swimsuits, not just the pool surface, which is why it keeps coming back after a partial cleanup.

5. Clean or replace everything that touched the water
