Why Is My Pool Water Turning Brown or Rust-Colored?

You walk out to the pool expecting the usual blue and instead find water that looks like weak tea, or worse, rust. It's an alarming sight, especially if it showed up overnight, but it's rarely an emergency. Brown or rust-colored pool water almost always traces back to one of two causes: dissolved metal reacting with chlorine, or organic debris that's overwhelmed your sanitizer. The fix is completely different depending on which one you're dealing with, so before you dump in more chlorine or start scrubbing, it's worth spending a few minutes figuring out which culprit you actually have. Getting the order of operations right matters more than getting there quickly, and both causes are fixable without draining the pool.
Metal staining vs. organic debris: how to tell them apart
Both problems can turn water a similar brown, orange, or rust tone, which is exactly why so many pool owners misdiagnose one as the other. Metal staining tends to appear quickly, often within minutes of adding chlorine or shocking the pool, and the water itself may stay relatively clear even while it's tinted brown or orange. Organic debris, by contrast, tends to build up more gradually over a few days and is usually paired with cloudiness, a musty or earthy smell, and visible film settling on the pool floor. Neither one is dangerous on its own, but treating a metal problem like an organic one, by shocking hard and hoping, can actually make the staining worse instead of clearing it. A quick way to think about it: metal problems tend to be about what's dissolved in the water, while organic problems tend to be about what's floating or settled in it.

Confirm it before you shock: the vitamin C test
If the table above doesn't give you a clear answer, there's a simple test many pool professionals recommend running before you do anything else: crush a plain vitamin C (ascorbic acid) tablet and rub it directly on a stained spot on the plaster or tile, or drop a couple of crushed tablets into a cup of pool water next to a stained pool toy. Vitamin C is a mild reducing agent, and metal stains typically fade or disappear within a minute or two of contact, sometimes leaving a distinct clean spot right where the tablet touched. Organic staining won't react the same way, which makes this a fast, low-cost way to rule metal in or out before you decide on a fix. It also costs almost nothing and takes less time than a full water test, so there's little downside to checking even if you're fairly confident about which one you're dealing with.
Note: If you suspect metal, hold off on shocking the pool. Chlorine oxidizes dissolved metal, and that oxidation reaction is often exactly what turns previously clear (but metal-laden) water brown or rust-colored in the first place. Add a metal sequestrant first so the metal has something to bind to instead of falling out of solution as visible stain.
Fixing brown water: sources, causes, and the right order of operations
- Metal usually comes from somewhere specific: well water fill-ups are a common source of dissolved iron and manganese, which oxidize into rust-brown or brownish-grey tones; a heater's copper heat exchanger, metal ladders, or rusting rebar behind a cracked plaster surface can leach metal over time, especially once water chemistry drifts corrosive (typically low pH, low total alkalinity, or low calcium hardness); and copper-based algaecides can contribute too, more often showing up as blue-green staining but reading muddier brown when mixed with iron.
- If it's metal, add a sequestrant per the product label, then retest and rebalance pH and total alkalinity before shocking. Once the sequestrant has had time to bind the metal, a normal shock treatment is far less likely to cause new staining. Run the filter continuously until the water clears and vacuum up any settled residue.
- If it's organic debris, skim and vacuum out what you can first, then shock the pool. - Either path, retest about 24 hours after treating and resist stacking another large dose on top of the first one before giving the water time to respond. Most brown-water treatments show real improvement within a day or two, with stubborn metal staining sometimes taking longer.
