What Are Those White Flakes in My Pool Water?

Small white flakes drifting through the water or crusting the tile line are almost always calcium scale, not a sign your pool is dirty or unsafe. Here's how to confirm it and what actually fixes it.

You're brushing the walls or just glancing across the water and you notice it: small white flakes, almost like snow or confetti, drifting through the pool or settling near the return jets. It looks alarming, but in the vast majority of cases it's calcium scale, tiny bits of dissolved calcium that came out of solution and are now flaking off a surface somewhere in your system. It's a water-balance issue, not a hygiene issue, and it's very fixable.

What's actually causing the flakes

Pool water holds calcium in solution, but only up to a point. When the water's calcium hardness, pH, or alkalinity climb too high (often all three at once, since they push each other around), the water becomes "scale-forming": it can no longer hold all that dissolved calcium, so some of it precipitates out as solid calcium carbonate. That's the white flaky material you're seeing. It commonly shows up crusted around waterline tile, chalky and rough on plaster, or as loose flakes shedding off the inside of pipes, the heater's heat exchanger, or the salt cell in a saltwater pool.

This is the same underlying chemistry pool professionals track with the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), a widely used formula that combines pH, temperature, calcium hardness, and total alkalinity into one number. An LSI above roughly +0.3 is considered scale-forming, meaning the water is oversaturated with calcium and looking for somewhere to deposit it. Below roughly -0.3, the water swings the other way and becomes corrosive instead, which is a different problem with different symptoms (etched plaster, pitted metal) rather than flakes.

How to tell it's scale and not something else

White flakes are usually calcium scale, but a few other things can look similar at a glance. Here's how to tell them apart before you start adjusting chemistry.

  • Calcium scale: small white or off-white flakes or chunks, often chalky or crusty when you rub them between your fingers. Frequently paired with a rough, sandpaper-like feel on plaster or a white crust forming right at the waterline tile.
  • Plaster dust: a fine, powdery white cloud (not distinct flakes) that's most common in a pool that's newly plastered or recently acid-washed. This settles and vacuums up rather than continuing to appear over weeks.
  • Dead algae or organic debris: usually has some color (grayish, greenish, or brownish) rather than bright white, and often comes with cloudy water or a musty smell.
  • DE filter powder: a very fine white dust that shows up if a diatomaceous earth filter has a torn grid or a backwash valve that isn't seating properly, usually appears right after backwashing or filter maintenance.

Note: If the flakes rub off easily and feel gritty or chalky rather than smooth, and you also notice a white crust at the tile line or rough patches on plaster, that's a strong sign of calcium scale. Your pool is not dirty or unsafe to swim in, the water chemistry just needs rebalancing.

The water chemistry behind scale

Three numbers matter most here: calcium hardness, pH, and total alkalinity. Any one of them running high can push water toward scale-forming, and they tend to drift together because alkalinity and pH influence each other closely.

If your calcium hardness tests above roughly 400 ppm, or your pH or alkalinity are sitting at the high end of acceptable (or above it), that's your likely culprit. Calcium hardness is worth testing specifically here, since it's the one people skip most often, test strips cover pH and chlorine reliably but not every strip includes a calcium reading, so a liquid test kit or a pool store water analysis is worth it if you haven't checked calcium hardness recently.

How to fix it

The fix depends on which number is out of range, and correcting pH or alkalinity is far easier than correcting calcium hardness.

  • High pH or high alkalinity: these are straightforward to lower with standard pH-reducer or muriatic acid dosing. Skimmer's pH calculator can work out how much to add for your pool size, and retesting a few hours after dosing will confirm you're back in range.
  • High calcium hardness: there's no chemical that directly lowers dissolved calcium. The standard fix is a partial drain-and-refill, replacing some of the pool's water with fresh, lower-hardness water to dilute the calcium down toward the 200-400 ppm ideal range. A sequestering agent can temporarily keep calcium suspended and reduce visible flaking, but it manages the symptom rather than fixing the underlying number.
  • Existing scale on surfaces: for light scale on tile or plaster, a pumice stone (safe on plaster and tile, not on vinyl or fiberglass) or a scale-specific cleaner can remove what's already deposited. For scale inside pipes, the heater, or a salt cell, a plumbed-in acid wash or a professional descaling service is usually the more reliable route, especially for a salt cell, which most manufacturers recommend cleaning with a mild acid solution on a regular schedule anyway.
  • Going forward: once the water is back in the ideal range, a sequestrant or scale inhibitor added periodically can help keep calcium in solution, particularly in areas with naturally hard fill water.

Note: Don't drop a large dose of acid all at once trying to fix everything in one shot. Adjust gradually and retest, pH and alkalinity typically take several hours to fully register on a retest, and overcorrecting can swing the water toward corrosive instead of scale-forming, which brings its own set of problems.

Where scale likes to hide

Even after you've dialed in the water, it's worth a quick equipment check, because scale doesn't just form in open water, it deposits wherever water sits or heats up. Look at the heater's heat exchanger (scale buildup there reduces heating efficiency and can eventually cause the heater to overheat and shut down), the inside of the salt cell if you have a saltwater system, and any narrow plumbing runs where flow is naturally slower. If you notice reduced heater performance or your salt cell throwing an error code alongside the flakes, that's often scale-related rather than a separate equipment failure.

Tracking calcium hardness alongside pH and alkalinity each time you test, rather than only when something looks off, is the easiest way to catch scale-forming water before it starts flaking. Yes. Calcium scale is a water-balance issue, not a contamination or sanitation issue. It's not harmful to swim in, though heavy flaking can feel gritty underfoot and is worth clearing up for comfort and to protect your equipment.

Can I just vacuum up the flakes and skip fixing the chemistry?
