What else can make a pool floor feel slippery

- High pH or high calcium hardness can leave a mineral film on plaster and tile that feels slightly slippery or scaly rather than slimy. This tends to feel more like a coating you can see (a hazy or chalky look) than a purely slick texture.
- A surface that's simply aging: plaster naturally gets a bit softer and more porous over many years, which can feel different underfoot even when the water chemistry is fine. This is a gradual, years-long change, not something that shows up in a week.
- Low chlorine relative to bather load or heat, even without visible algae yet. Chlorine demand spikes after heavy swimming, a hot stretch of weather, or rain, and a brief dip below the ideal range is enough for biofilm to get a foothold before you'd notice a color change.
- Sunscreen, lotion, and body oils can leave a temporary slick film, especially right after a pool party, but this usually clears within a day of normal filtration and doesn't come back on its own.
How to check which one you're dealing with
You don't need lab equipment to narrow this down, just a test kit and a bit of observation.
- Test free chlorine and pH first. If free chlorine is below the ideal 1-3 ppm range (acceptable range is 1-4 ppm) or pH is above the ideal 7.4-7.6 (acceptable up to 7.8), that points toward biofilm or scale rather than a one-off film from swimmers.

What to do about it
If chlorine and pH both test in range and the slickness is mild, brushing the floor and walls thoroughly, then running the filter for a full cycle, is often enough to break up early biofilm before it becomes a visible problem. If chlorine is low or the water clouds when you brush, treat it as early algae:
- Brush the entire floor and walls, not just the slippery spots, since biofilm often starts in more than one place before it's noticeable everywhere.
