Pool Staining: Causes and How to Remove Each Type

Rust-brown, blue-green, and chalky white marks all get called "pool stains," but they come from different causes and need different fixes. Here's how to tell them apart.

A stain on a pool surface can look alarming, especially on white plaster, but most staining falls into one of three categories, and each one has a fairly reliable fix once you know which you're dealing with. The mistake most owners make is treating every stain the same way, usually by shocking the pool and hoping. That works great on organic stains and does almost nothing for a metal stain or a mineral-balance problem. Sorting out the cause first saves you chemicals, money, and a lot of scrubbing.

Metal stains: rust, copper, and manganese

Metal stains come from dissolved metal in the water settling onto the pool surface. That metal usually gets into the water one of three ways: fill water from a well that's naturally high in iron or manganese, corroding metal equipment (old heater cores, ladders, or fasteners), or a copper-based algaecide that's been overused. Metal stains tend to show up as a smooth, even discoloration rather than a scattered patchy one, and they often trace the shape of a fitting, ladder, or light niche where the metal source sits.

  • Rust or iron: brownish-red to orange, often starting near metal fixtures or a corroding heater.
  • Copper: blue-green or teal, common after heavy use of a copper-based algaecide or copper heat exchanger corrosion.
  • Manganese: purplish-black or blue-gray, less common but frequently linked to well-fed pools.

Organic stains: leaves, dirt, and decaying debris

Organic stains come from plant material and other debris that sits on the pool surface long enough to leave a tannin mark, the same basic chemistry that stains a countertop under a coffee cup. Leaves, seed pods, dirt, and even a dead frog or bug left in a corner overnight can all do it. These stains are usually brown, yellow-brown, or greenish, and they're typically localized right where the debris settled, often in a corner, on steps, or under a skimmer that wasn't cleaned out.

The good news is that organic stains respond well to sanitizer. A chlorine level that's been running low for a while (or a pool that sat closed or neglected) is the most common setup for organic staining, since decaying material breaks down faster than a weak sanitizer can oxidize it away.

Plaster scale and etching: not stains exactly, but often mistaken for them

White or gray discoloration is usually a water-balance issue rather than a true stain. Scale is a chalky, rough, whitish buildup that forms when the water is scale-forming, generally driven by calcium hardness or pH running above the ideal range. Etching is close to the opposite problem: it's a dull, rough, sometimes pitted patch that forms when the water is corrosive, generally driven by low pH, low total alkalinity, or low calcium hardness, and it's actually removing plaster rather than depositing anything on top of it. Many pool professionals evaluate this with the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), a standard formula that combines pH, temperature, calcium hardness, and total alkalinity into a single balanced, scale-forming, or corrosive reading.

A quick test that tells metal, organic, and scale apart

Two simple checks handle most of the guesswork. For a suspected metal stain, press a vitamin C tablet (ascorbic acid) directly against the mark underwater for a minute or two; if the stain visibly lightens or clears where the tablet touched, it's metal. For a suspected organic stain, hold a chlorine tablet directly against the mark for a day; organic stains typically fade or vanish, while metal and scale stains generally won't respond. Scale usually reveals itself by touch: it feels rough or gritty rather than smooth, and it won't lighten with either test.

Removing each type

  • Metal stains: a stain remover built on ascorbic or citric acid, applied directly to the stain, is the standard first step. Follow it with a metal sequestrant added to the whole pool to keep dissolved metal suspended so it can't fall back out onto the surface. If the fill water is the ongoing source, a maintenance dose of sequestrant on a regular schedule is usually needed rather than a one-time fix.
  • Organic stains: brush the area to loosen the mark, then bring the pool up to a shock dose. A common rule of thumb is roughly 10 times the combined chlorine reading, with a minimum shock dose of about 10 ppm free chlorine even if combined chlorine reads low, then retest before swimming again.   • Scale: a scale remover or a mild acid wash (for heavier buildup) removes what's already deposited, but it comes back if the underlying water stays scale-forming. Bring calcium hardness, pH, and total alkalinity back toward the ideal ranges and the deposits generally stop reforming.
  • Etching: light etching often stops progressing once the water is rebalanced toward the corrosive-neutral range; it won't reverse the surface loss, but it prevents it from getting worse. Deeper or widespread etching is a surface-repair or replastering conversation with a pool professional, not a chemical fix.

Keeping stains from coming back

Most staining is a slow-building result of something that was ignorable for a few weeks: a chlorine level that drifted low, debris that sat in a corner too long, or calcium hardness that crept up after some evaporation and top-offs. A light weekly testing habit catches all three long before they show up as a mark on the surface. Brush the walls and steps weekly, skim debris before it sinks and settles, and if your fill water is known to run high in metals, keep a sequestrant on a regular maintenance schedule rather than waiting for a stain to reach for one. How do I know if my pool stain is metal or just dirt?

Can I use both a metal sequestrant and chlorine shock at the same time?
Generally yes, sequestrants and chlorine don't conflict, but it's worth spacing them out and retesting in between so you can tell which product is actually doing the work.
