Why Isn't My Pool Filter Catching Debris?

The pump is running, the pressure gauge looks about normal, and yet leaves, dirt, and that fine cloudy haze are still drifting around the pool like nothing's filtering at all. It's a confusing problem because everything looks like it's working. The reassuring part is that a filter that's "on" but not actually catching debris almost always traces back to one of three things: water bypassing the filter media entirely through a valve, debris passing straight through torn or gapped media, or a filter that's overdue for a real clean. None of these require guessing, they just require checking things in the right order.
First, rule out a bypassed or misaligned valve
Before assuming the filter itself is broken, check whether water is even routing through it. Most sand and DE filters use a multiport valve on top with settings like Filter, Backwash, Waste, Rinse, and Recirculate. If that valve got bumped, wasn't seated fully between positions, or has a worn gasket that's leaking internally, water can flow through the tank without ever passing through the sand or grids the way it's supposed to. Cartridge systems have a simpler setup but the same failure mode: if there's a bypass valve on the plumbing (common on pools that also run a heater or solar), an unnoticed quarter-turn can send water around the filter instead of through it.
- Confirm the multiport valve handle is pushed all the way down and locked into the Filter position, not resting between two settings.
- Watch the pressure gauge when you switch briefly to Backwash, then back to Filter; a big, sudden pressure change is a good sign the valve is actually routing water differently between settings, meaning it's functioning as intended.
- If you have a visible bypass valve for a heater or solar loop, check that it's fully open toward the filter and not partially diverting flow around it.
- A multiport valve stuck between settings for a while can also let fine debris and even sand leak past the internal spider gasket; a valve that's several years old and hasn't been rebuilt is a reasonable suspect.
Torn, clogged, or worn-out cartridges
Cartridge filters are the easiest type to inspect and also the easiest to overlook, since a cartridge can look fine from a few feet away while having a small tear that lets debris straight through. Pull the cartridge and look closely at the pleats, especially near the top and bottom end caps where the fabric is glued or fused, that's where tears usually start. A cartridge doesn't need to look destroyed to be the problem, a gap you can see daylight through, or an end cap that's cracked or no longer seated tightly, is enough to let fine debris bypass the filtering surface entirely.
- Hold the cartridge up to sunlight or a flashlight from inside; light passing through evenly is normal, a bright spot or visible hole means a tear.
- Check both end caps for cracks and confirm the O-ring at the base isn't dried out, flattened, or missing, since a bad O-ring lets unfiltered water slip past the cartridge instead of through it.
- If the pleats are matted flat and gray or brown rather than distinct and off-white, the cartridge is likely past due for a real cleaning, not just a rinse, and heavily clogged media can also start channeling water around the dirtiest sections instead of through them.
- Cartridges generally need replacing every one to two years with regular cleaning, sooner in heavy use or a lot of sun exposure, so age alone is worth checking if yours has been in service a while.
Sand and DE filters have their own bypass points
Sand and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters catch debris differently than cartridges, so they fail differently too. In a sand filter, water is supposed to work its way down through the sand bed and out through a set of laterals at the bottom. If a lateral cracks, sand and debris can flow around it instead of being filtered, sometimes showing up as sand grains coming out of the pool's return jets, which is a fairly reliable sign something downstream of the sand bed is broken. DE filters depend on a thin coating of diatomaceous earth clinging to fabric grids inside the tank; if a grid tears or the DE coating gets knocked loose, the grid's bare fabric alone doesn't do much filtering on its own.

Note: If you suspect a tear or crack in any filter type, it helps to fix the cause before adding more chemical or running the pump longer to compensate. A torn cartridge or a cracked lateral won't resolve itself, and running a bypassing filter longer just recirculates the same unfiltered water.
Backwash timing matters as much as the filter itself
Even a perfectly intact filter stops catching debris well if it's backwashed on the wrong schedule. Backwashing too early, before the filter has actually loaded up with debris, wastes water and doesn't let the filter media build the fine coating that traps the smallest particles, which is why filtration on a freshly backwashed sand filter is often a little looser for the first day. Waiting too long causes the opposite problem: a sand bed can channel, meaning water starts forming narrow paths through the most-packed sand instead of filtering evenly, and a heavily clogged cartridge can start pushing debris through the weakest, most saturated sections of pleat instead of holding it. The general rule of thumb many pool professionals use is to backwash or clean once the filter pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 PSI above its clean, freshly-backwashed baseline, rather than on a fixed calendar schedule, since debris load varies a lot by season and by how much the pool gets used.
That means the single most useful thing you can do is know your filter's clean baseline pressure and check it regularly rather than guessing from memory. If none of the checks above turn up an obvious cause, an intact filter that's clean and correctly valved but still isn't catching debris is a reasonable point to bring in a pool professional, since it can also point to an undersized filter for the pool's volume or a flow rate issue upstream at the pump.
