7 Pool Maintenance Mistakes New Owners Make
The most common ways new pool owners waste money and chase phantom chemistry problems, and the small habit changes that fix each one for good.
Most pool problems aren't really chemistry problems, they're habit problems. The water is just reacting honestly to whatever routine (or lack of one) it's been given. New owners tend to make the same handful of mistakes in the first year, usually from a mix of over-caution and under-information. None of them are embarrassing, and every one of them is fixable once you know what to look for.
1. Overdosing chemicals to chase a bad reading
This is the single most common mistake, and it's usually well-intentioned. A test strip shows chlorine a little low, so you add a generous glug of liquid chlorine. It still reads low the next day, so you add more. Now free chlorine is high, pH has drifted, and you're adding a second chemical to fix a problem the first one caused.
The fix is patience and math instead of guesswork. As a rule of thumb, about one gallon of ~12.5% liquid chlorine raises roughly 10,000 gallons of water by about 10 ppm of free chlorine, and that scales linearly with your pool size and how many ppm you actually need to add. Season after season of tablet-only dosing, CYA quietly climbs well past the ideal range of 30-50 ppm, and sometimes past the acceptable range of 20-80 ppm entirely.
High CYA is sneaky because it doesn't look like anything is wrong until chlorine stops working as well as it used to, algae becomes harder to control, or you find yourself adding more and more chlorine just to hold a normal free chlorine reading. Once CYA is high, there's no chemical that lowers it. The only real fix is diluting the water with a partial drain and refill, which is exactly why it's worth catching early rather than discovering it three years in.

3. Skipping the brush
Vacuuming and skimming get the attention, but brushing the walls, steps, and corners is what actually prevents algae from getting a foothold. Algae spores settle into the microscopic texture of plaster, pebble, and grout lines, and chlorine alone has a harder time reaching them there than it does in open water. Regular brushing knocks them loose before they can attach and multiply, especially in warm, low-flow corners that the pump doesn't stir well.
New owners often skip this because it feels optional compared to testing water or running the pump. In practice, a pool that's brushed weekly needs meaningfully less shock and algaecide over a season than one that isn't, because you're preventing the problem instead of reacting to it.
4. Running the pump on too short a schedule
Circulation is what moves chlorine and filtered water past every corner of the pool, so an undersized run schedule shows up as chemistry that never quite balances no matter how much you dose. Many pools genuinely need 8-12 hours of pump time a day, more in hot weather when the water is warmer and algae grows faster, less in cooler months. Owners who shorten the schedule to save on electricity often end up spending more on chemicals chasing readings that circulation would have handled for free.

6. Ignoring the filter until pressure spikes
The filter is doing constant, invisible work, and it's easy to forget about until the pressure gauge is pegged or the water turns cloudy. A dirty filter doesn't just filter less, it also restricts flow, which strains the pump and reduces circulation, which then makes chemistry harder to hold, which brings the problem full circle to overdosing and CYA creep. Note your filter's pressure right after it's freshly cleaned or backwashed, then plan to clean it again once pressure climbs 8-10 PSI above that baseline. 7. Not keeping any kind of record
