Water Chemistry 101
A calm, complete guide to the eight readings that make pool water safe, clear, and comfortable to swim in, and how they work together as one system.
Pool water chemistry looks like eight unrelated numbers until you realize they're really one connected system: change any single reading and the others shift in response. pH tells you how acidic or basic the water is, but it only holds steady if total alkalinity is buffering it. Free chlorine only sanitizes effectively within a pH range it depends on. Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight, but too much of it can blunt chlorine's effectiveness almost as surely as too little protects it at all. None of these parameters is easy to understand in isolation, which is why this guide treats them as a set rather than eight separate problems to memorize.
None of it requires precision instruments or a chemistry degree. A weekly test with strips or a liquid kit, read against the ranges in each guide below, is enough to keep a healthy pool healthy and to catch a drifting one before it turns into a green, cloudy, or eye-stinging one. A reading outside the ideal range isn't an emergency on its own, it's a signal, usually caused by heat, rain, sunlight, or bather load, and usually corrected with a small, specific adjustment rather than a dramatic intervention.

Chemistry parameters in this guide
pH
pH measures how acidic or basic your pool water is on a 0-14 scale, with 7 as neutral. Pool water is kept slightly above neutral to stay close to the pH of the human eye and skin.
Free Chlorine
Free chlorine is the active, available sanitizer in the water that's ready to kill bacteria and algae, as distinct from chlorine that has already reacted with contaminants (see Combined Chlorine).
Combined Chlorine
Combined chlorine (chloramines) is chlorine that has already reacted with sweat, oils, and other contaminants and lost most of its sanitizing power.
Total Alkalinity
Total alkalinity measures the water's ability to resist pH changes, acting as a buffer that keeps pH from swinging wildly every time a chemical is added.
Calcium Hardness
Calcium hardness measures the concentration of dissolved calcium in the water, which affects how the water interacts with plaster, grout, and metal surfaces.
Cyanuric Acid
Cyanuric acid, also called stabilizer or conditioner, shields chlorine from breaking down under UV sunlight so it lasts longer in outdoor pools.
Salt
Salt level measures the dissolved sodium chloride that a salt chlorinator converts into chlorine through electrolysis, letting a saltwater pool generate much of its own sanitizer.
Water Temperature
Water temperature doesn't affect chemical balance directly, but it changes how fast other parameters move — warmer water typically accelerates chlorine breakdown and algae growth.

A calculated water-balance score, not something you test directly, that predicts whether your pool water will lean toward scale-forming or corrosive.
Breakpoint chlorination
The specific chlorine dose that overwhelms all the ammonia and organic contaminants in your water at once, wiping out combined chlorine (chloramines) in a single pass.
Chlorine lock (stabilizer lock)
A popular but misleading term for what happens when cyanuric acid (stabilizer) builds up so high that chlorine becomes too weak to sanitize effectively.
Total dissolved solids (TDS)
The total concentration of everything dissolved in your pool water, minerals, salts, and chemical byproducts combined, measured in parts per million.
Superchlorination
Adding a large, one-time dose of chlorine, well beyond the normal daily range, to rapidly raise free chlorine and knock out contaminants and combined chlorine.
Combined chlorine (chloramines)
The portion of chlorine in your water that has already reacted with contaminants and lost most of its sanitizing power, better known as chloramines.
