Water Chemistry 101

A calm, complete guide to the eight readings that make pool water safe, clear, and comfortable to swim in, and how they work together as one system.

Pool water chemistry looks like eight unrelated numbers until you realize they're really one connected system: change any single reading and the others shift in response. pH tells you how acidic or basic the water is, but it only holds steady if total alkalinity is buffering it. Free chlorine only sanitizes effectively within a pH range it depends on. Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight, but too much of it can blunt chlorine's effectiveness almost as surely as too little protects it at all. None of these parameters is easy to understand in isolation, which is why this guide treats them as a set rather than eight separate problems to memorize.

None of it requires precision instruments or a chemistry degree. A weekly test with strips or a liquid kit, read against the ranges in each guide below, is enough to keep a healthy pool healthy and to catch a drifting one before it turns into a green, cloudy, or eye-stinging one. A reading outside the ideal range isn't an emergency on its own, it's a signal, usually caused by heat, rain, sunlight, or bather load, and usually corrected with a small, specific adjustment rather than a dramatic intervention.

pH

pH measures how acidic or basic your pool water is on a 0-14 scale, with 7 as neutral. Pool water is kept slightly above neutral to stay close to the pH of the human eye and skin.

Free Chlorine

Free chlorine is the active, available sanitizer in the water that's ready to kill bacteria and algae, as distinct from chlorine that has already reacted with contaminants (see Combined Chlorine).
