Breakpoint chlorination is the point at which enough free chlorine has been added to fully oxidize the ammonia and nitrogen compounds bound up as combined chlorine, rather than just adding a little more sanitizer on top of them. Reach it, and combined chlorine drops sharply while free chlorine finally starts climbing again. Miss it, meaning you add chlorine but stay under the threshold, and you can actually make chloramine odor and eye irritation worse before it gets better. It typically takes 5 to 10 times the current combined chlorine reading, delivered in one shock dose rather than spread across several days.
