Superchlorination
Adding a large, one-time dose of chlorine, well beyond the normal daily range, to rapidly raise free chlorine and knock out contaminants and combined chlorine.
Superchlorination (often just called 'shocking') means dosing enough chlorine to push free chlorine to roughly 5-10x the pool's combined chlorine level, well above the normal 1-3 ppm maintenance range, for a short period. It's used routinely (weekly or biweekly in season) to stay ahead of chloramine buildup, and situationally after heavy bather load, a rainstorm, or visible algae. Done correctly, it reaches breakpoint chlorination and clears combined chlorine in one pass; done too lightly, it can temporarily make chloramine odor worse without fully resolving it.
