What is Salt?
Salt level measures the dissolved sodium chloride that a salt chlorinator converts into chlorine through electrolysis, letting a saltwater pool generate much of its own sanitizer.
Why it matters
Salt levels outside the chlorinator manufacturer's range can damage the salt cell — too low reduces chlorine output, too high accelerates cell wear and scaling. This parameter only applies to saltwater pools with a salt chlorine generator installed.
How to raise Salt
Add pool-grade salt (sodium chloride) directly to the water per the chlorinator manufacturer's dosing chart, then run the pump to circulate before retesting.
How to lower Salt
Partially drain and refill with fresh water; there's no way to chemically remove dissolved salt.
How often to test
Monthly, and always after adding significant fresh water (heavy rain, refilling, backwashing).
