Weir
The flap or gate at the mouth of a skimmer that pulls a thin layer of surface water in while keeping debris from floating back out.
The weir is the small, self-adjusting door at a skimmer's opening that rises and falls with the water level, maintaining a steady flow of surface water into the skimmer basket regardless of how full the pool is. It's what makes skimming effective: by drawing water from the top inch or so of the pool, where leaves, pollen, and oils collect, it keeps debris from ever reaching the main body of water. A cracked, warped, or missing weir is a common, easy-to-miss reason a pool's surface stays dirty even when the pump is running fine.
