Bonding
The electrical safety practice of connecting all metal pool components, ladders, lights, drain covers, pump motors, together so they share the same electrical potential.
Bonding links every metal component in and around a pool, ladders, handrails, diving board anchors, light niches, main drain covers, and the pump motor, with a copper conductor so they're all held at the same electrical potential. It's a separate concept from grounding: bonding doesn't route stray current to earth, it prevents dangerous voltage differences between metal parts a swimmer might touch simultaneously. Bonding is required by electrical code (NEC Article 680) on essentially all in-ground and most permanently installed pools, and it's inspection work for a licensed electrician, not a DIY maintenance task.
