Why Is My Pool Foaming?

Pool foam almost always traces back to something you (or a product) put in the water, not a chemistry emergency. Here's how to find the source and clear it up.

You turn on the jets or the wind picks up and suddenly there's a layer of bubbly, sudsy foam collecting along the surface or piling up against the steps. It looks alarming, but foam is one of the more benign pool problems out there. It's almost never a sign your water is unsafe, it's a sign that something surfactant-based (soap, lotion, or a low-grade chemical) made it into the water and is doing exactly what surfactants do: trapping air.

What's actually causing the foam

Foam forms when a surfactant, a substance that lowers water's surface tension, gets agitated by your pump, jets, or waterfall. Plain water doesn't foam no matter how hard you churn it. Once something surfactant-like is dissolved in it, agitation whips air into stable little bubbles instead of letting it escape. The question is never really "why does agitation cause foam," it's "what surfactant got into my water." A few sources cover most cases.

  • Low-quality algaecides, especially older-style polyquat and quaternary ammonium ("quat") algaecides. These are the single most common cause of persistent pool foam and are notorious for it even when used at the labeled dose.
  • Body products: sunscreen, lotion, deodorant, and hair or skin care residue rinsing off swimmers, especially after a party or a day with a lot of bathers.
  • Laundry or dish soap residue, usually from a swimsuit that wasn't fully rinsed after washing, or from cleaning pool toys and floats with household detergent.
  • Some non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate) and certain clarifiers or enzyme products can foam temporarily, especially in a spa or pool with a lot of aeration.
  • Very soft fill water combined with low calcium hardness. Soft, low-mineral water foams more readily than harder water, which is part of why the acceptable calcium hardness range (150-400 ppm) exists as a lower bound as well as an upper one.
  • A spa or water feature with high aeration (bubblers, jets, waterfalls) will turn a mild surfactant problem into visible foam faster than a still pool would, simply because there's more agitation to whip it up.

Note: Foam is a cosmetic and product problem, not a sanitation emergency. Your chlorine and pH can be perfectly in range while the water foams. Don't panic-dose the pool; find the surfactant source first.

How to tell which source you're dealing with

A little detective work narrows this down fast. Think back over the last week or two: did you add or switch algaecide brands? Was there a pool party with more swimmers (and more sunscreen) than usual? Did anyone wash swimsuits or pool toys with regular detergent and rinse them in or near the pool? If you can point to one of those, that's very likely your answer.

  • If the foam showed up within a day or two of adding an algaecide, read the label. Many budget algaecides are quat-based and foam by design when agitated; switching to a polyquat-free or copper-based algaecide, or simply skipping algaecide when it isn't needed, usually solves it going forward.
  • If the foam correlates with heavy pool use (parties, kids' birthday parties, lots of swimmers), it's probably body-product residue and will usually fade within a few days of normal filtration once bather load drops back to normal.
  • If it started right after someone rinsed a suit or toys near the pool, that's your answer, and it typically clears on its own within a day.
  • If foam is a recurring, low-level problem with no clear trigger and your calcium hardness tests below 150 ppm, soft water is a reasonable suspect worth addressing.

Clearing foam that's already there

For an isolated foam event, the honest answer is that time and filtration handle most of it. A commercial anti-foam (defoamer) product works quickly as a stopgap: it doesn't remove the surfactant, it just collapses the existing bubbles so the surface looks clear again while your filter catches up. That's a legitimate short-term fix, especially before guests arrive, but it isn't a substitute for finding and stopping the source.

  • Run the filter continuously (or as close to it as practical) for a day or two after a foam event; surfactants filter out over time just like most other contaminants.
  • Skim off visible foam with a net where you can reach it, particularly around skimmers and return jets where it tends to concentrate.
  • Hold off on adding more algaecide or other additives until the foam clears, since stacking products can make it harder to tell what's actually causing the problem.

Preventing it from coming back

Most repeat foam problems come down to a habit rather than a one-time accident. A few adjustments keep it from recurring.

  • Choose an algaecide labeled foam-resistant, or skip algaecide entirely when your chlorine routine is already keeping algae in check; it's often an optional product, not a required one.
  • Rinse swimsuits in plain water instead of laundering them right before a swim, and rinse pool toys and floats with a hose instead of dish soap.
  • If you run a spa attached to the pool, keep in mind it will show foam sooner than the main pool because of the extra aeration, so treat a foamy spa as an early warning to check the whole system.
  • Keep calcium hardness in its acceptable range (150-400 ppm) rather than letting it drift low, particularly if you're on soft well water or have recently done a partial drain-and-refill.

Is foamy pool water safe to swim in?
Generally yes. Foam itself isn't a sanitation issue, it's a surface-tension issue caused by a surfactant like algaecide residue or body-care products. Check your chlorine and pH as you normally would; if those are in range, the foam is a cosmetic problem rather than a safety one.
Will shocking the pool get rid of foam?
