Why Is My Pool Cloudy After Rain?

Rain dilutes your chemistry, washes in debris, and can shift your pH all at once. Here's why that clouds the water and the order to rebalance it in.

A storm rolls through, and by morning your pool has gone from clear to a hazy, milky blue that you can't quite see the bottom of. This is one of the most common calls pool professionals get after a heavy rain, and it's rarely a sign of anything seriously wrong. Rain changes your water in a few predictable ways at once: it dilutes your chemistry, washes debris in from the yard and roof, and can shift your pH, and any one of those on its own is often enough to cloud the water. The good news is that storm-related cloudiness almost always responds to the same handful of steps: clear out debris, run the filter longer than usual, retest, and rebalance in the right order. Here's what's actually happening in the water and what to do about it.

What actually causes the cloudiness

  • Dilution. A heavy rain adds a large volume of water that has essentially no chlorine or cyanuric acid in it, which drops your sanitizer and stabilizer levels the same way topping off with a garden hose does, just faster and in a much bigger dose.
  • Runoff and debris. Rain washes dirt, pollen, grass clippings, fertilizer residue, and other organic material off your yard, deck, and roof and straight into the pool. That organic load does two things: it scatters light, which is what makes water look hazy instead of clear, and it eats up free chlorine quickly, leaving less sanitizer available to keep the water clear.
  • A pH and alkalinity shift. Rainwater is naturally a bit acidic, typically landing somewhere in the mid-5 to 6 range on the pH scale, well below your pool's target of 7.4 to 7.6. A big enough rain can pull your pool's pH and total alkalinity down with it. Once pH drifts outside the 7.2-7.8 acceptable range, chlorine works less efficiently and dissolved minerals are more likely to come out of solution as a fine, cloudy haze.
  • Wind and agitation. Storms stir the water. Wind, rain impact, and heavier splashing can kick up fine silt and debris that had settled on the pool floor, mixing it back into suspension where it clouds the water even after the rain itself has stopped.
  • A sudden temperature drop. A quick cool-down can also nudge water chemistry, particularly in pools already running high on calcium hardness, where the shift can cause calcium to fall out of solution as a cloudy, chalky haze rather than staying dissolved.

Check the water level before anything else

Heavy rain often pushes the pool level above the skimmer opening, and that's easy to miss because everything else looks normal. When the water sits too high, the skimmer can't pull surface debris and film into the filter, so leaves, pollen, and oils just sit on top instead of getting filtered out, and cloudiness lingers no matter how well you've rebalanced the chemistry underneath it. If the water line is above the middle of the tile or the skimmer opening, drain it back down using a submersible pump or your filter's waste setting before you do anything else. This one step alone resolves a surprising number of "why won't my pool clear up" cases.

Rebalance, then let the filter finish the job

  • Skim and net floating debris first, and vacuum any silt or leaves that settled on the bottom before you run the filter hard, so you're not just recirculating the same particles over and over.
  • Run the pump and filter continuously for 24 to 48 hours after a heavy storm instead of your normal schedule. Physically filtering out the fine particles is what actually clears cloudy water; chemistry alone won't do it.
  • Test the water once debris is cleared and the pump has run for a few hours. Skip the guessing and check pH, total alkalinity, free chlorine, and cyanuric acid so you know exactly what shifted.
  • Rebalance total alkalinity and pH first. Both affect how well chlorine works, so correcting them before anything else means any chlorine or shock you add afterward actually does its job instead of fighting an imbalanced pool.
  • Bring free chlorine back up, and expect to need more than a routine top-off. Because storms add a real organic load, this is one of the more common times a pool actually needs a shock dose. As a rule of thumb, that's roughly 10 times the combined chlorine reading, with a practical minimum around 10 ppm of free chlorine even if you didn't test combined chlorine specifically.   • Give it 24 hours and retest before adding more of anything. Most storm-related cloudiness clears within a day or two once the water's back in range and the filter has had time to catch up. The most common mistake is dumping in more chemical because the water still looks hazy an hour after dosing.

Note: Cloudy water after a storm is common and rarely an emergency by itself, so treat it as a rebalance-and-filter problem, not a panic problem. The exception is if the water also turns green or you genuinely can't see the bottom of the shallow end: that usually points to an algae bloom on top of the storm dilution, and it calls for a full shock treatment rather than just a chemistry touch-up. Is cloudy water after rain safe to swim in?
Not automatically unsafe, but it's worth holding off until you've tested. Rain dilutes both chlorine and cyanuric acid, so the water can have less sanitizing power than it looks like it does even before it turns visibly hazy. Test pH and free chlorine first, and swim once free chlorine is back in the 1-4 ppm acceptable range.
How long does it take for a pool to clear up after rain?
