What Is Cyanuric Acid and Why Does Your Pool Need It?

Cyanuric acid (CYA) is the stabilizer that keeps chlorine from burning off in sunlight, but too much of it can quietly weaken your sanitizer instead of helping it.

If you've ever looked at a pool test strip and wondered what that unfamiliar "CYA" or "stabilizer" panel is even for, you're not alone. Cyanuric acid is one of the least understood numbers in pool chemistry, mostly because it doesn't do anything dramatic. It doesn't sanitize the water, it doesn't adjust pH, and you can't see or smell it. What it does is protect the chlorine you're already paying for, which makes it worth understanding even though it rarely demands attention on its own.

What cyanuric acid actually does

Cyanuric acid, often shortened to CYA and also called stabilizer or conditioner, is a chemical that binds loosely to free chlorine molecules in outdoor pools. Unprotected chlorine breaks down rapidly in direct sunlight: UV rays can burn off a meaningful portion of your free chlorine in as little as an hour or two on a sunny day. CYA acts like sunscreen for chlorine, shielding it from UV degradation so it sticks around long enough to actually sanitize the water instead of evaporating before it gets the chance.

This is why outdoor pools need stabilizer and most indoor pools don't. Without CYA, an outdoor pool owner might dose chlorine in the morning only to find it nearly gone by afternoon, chasing a moving target all season long.

Where CYA comes from

You rarely have to add pure cyanuric acid on its own. Most pools build up CYA gradually through stabilized chlorine products, chemicals that already have cyanuric acid bonded into them:

  • Trichlor tablets and pucks (the slow-dissolving tablets in a floater or feeder) are roughly 50% cyanuric acid by weight, so they raise CYA every time you use them.
  • Dichlor granular chlorine also contains cyanuric acid, though in a smaller proportion than trichlor.
  • Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) and cal-hypo shock contain no cyanuric acid at all, so they don't raise CYA.
  • Pure stabilizer/conditioner products exist for pools that need a deliberate boost without adding more chlorine at the same time.

This is the detail that catches a lot of pool owners off guard: if trichlor tablets are your only chlorine source, your CYA level climbs steadily over the season whether you're paying attention to it or not, since every dose of chlorine also adds a little more stabilizer that never goes away on its own.

Too little CYA means your chlorine works well for a short time and then disappears. Too much CYA means your chlorine sticks around on paper but stops doing its job as effectively, which is the less obvious and more frustrating problem.

Chlorine lock: why high CYA is sneaky

"Chlorine lock" is the term many pool professionals use for what happens when CYA climbs too high. Your free chlorine reading might look perfectly fine, say 3 ppm, right in the ideal 1-3 ppm range, but that chlorine is bound up so tightly by excess CYA that it can't sanitize efficiently. The pool starts drifting toward algae or cloudiness even though the test strip says everything's normal, which is exactly the kind of quiet, gradual drift that catches people off guard mid-season.

Note: There's no need to panic if this happens to you. Chlorine lock develops slowly over weeks or months of stabilized chlorine use, not overnight, and it's very manageable once you know to look for it. The fix just takes patience rather than a dramatic chemical response.

Some pool professionals use a rule of thumb here: as CYA rises, the effective sanitizing power of a given free chlorine reading drops, so many recommend keeping a slightly higher FC reading (some suggest targeting FC around 7.5% of your CYA level) once CYA sits toward the top of its range. That's a helpful mental model, but it isn't a substitute for retesting after any adjustment.

How to lower cyanuric acid

Here's the part that surprises a lot of pool owners: there's no chemical that lowers cyanuric acid. It doesn't break down from sunlight, evaporate, or get consumed the way chlorine does. Once it's in the water, it stays there until the water itself is diluted or replaced. The only reliable fix is a partial drain-and-refill: draining some of the pool and replacing it with fresh water, which is almost always CYA-free, to dilute the concentration down toward your target range.

  • Test your current CYA level before draining anything, so you know how much dilution you actually need.
  • A partial drain is usually enough. You rarely need to empty the whole pool to bring CYA back into range.
  • After refilling, retest pH, alkalinity, and chlorine too, since fresh fill water resets more than just CYA.
  • Switching from trichlor tablets to liquid chlorine or cal-hypo going forward prevents CYA from climbing right back up.

How to raise cyanuric acid

If your CYA is reading low, typically under 20 ppm, especially after a fresh fill, a spring opening, or heavy rain dilution, you can raise it directly with a granular or liquid stabilizer/conditioner product. As a rule of thumb, roughly 13 ounces of stabilizer per 10,000 gallons of pool water raises CYA by about 10 ppm, though this scales with your pool's actual volume and how far you need to move the number. Treat this as an estimate and retest a few days after dosing to confirm.

Note: Cyanuric acid dissolves slowly, much more slowly than chlorine or pH adjusters. Add it through a skimmer feeder or in a sock hung in front of a return, never broadcast directly into the pool. Undissolved granules that settle on the floor can bleach a vinyl liner, and a broadcast dose can give you a falsely low reading for several days while it finishes dissolving.

How often should you actually test it

Unlike pH or free chlorine, cyanuric acid doesn't swing week to week, so you don't need to test it every time you test your water. A monthly check during swim season is usually enough for most pools, with an extra test any time you've made a big change: after opening for the season, after a large refill, or after switching chlorine products. Can I just skip cyanuric acid entirely?
