Superchlorination vs. Shocking: Is There a Difference?
Two terms, one process, and a lot of confusing product labels. Here's what superchlorination and shocking actually mean, and why the difference rarely matters to you.
You've probably seen both words used for what seems like the same thing: a bag of "pool shock" at the hardware store, and a "Superchlorinate" button on your salt system's control panel. If you've wondered whether you're supposed to do one, the other, or both, the short answer is that they're almost always describing the same underlying process. The longer answer is worth knowing, because it explains why your salt system's boost setting and a bag of granular shock don't always behave the same way.
The short answer
Note: Superchlorination and shocking both mean the same thing chemically: temporarily raising free chlorine far above its normal maintenance level to burn off chloramines and organic waste. "Shock" is the common, casual term for doing this by adding a chemical product. "Superchlorination" is the more technical term, and it's also what many saltwater chlorinator systems call their built-in boost mode.
What's actually happening in the water
Your everyday free chlorine reading, ideally 1-3 ppm, is doing two jobs at once: killing new contaminants and, less efficiently, breaking down chloramines that have already formed. Chloramines are the combined chlorine byproduct of sanitizer reacting with sweat, sunscreen, and other organic material, and they're what causes that sharp "chlorine smell" and eye irritation, ironically from too little effective chlorine rather than too much.
Breakpoint chlorination is the point where you've added enough chlorine, all at once, to overwhelm and fully oxidize those chloramines rather than just nibbling at them. The rule of thumb most pool professionals use is roughly 10 times your combined chlorine reading, with a practical minimum dose of about 10 ppm even when combined chlorine is low or you're shocking as routine maintenance rather than in response to a specific reading. Whether you get there by dumping in liquid chlorine, dissolving granular cal-hypo shock, or running your salt cell at maximum output for several hours, the chemistry at the finish line is identical: free chlorine spikes well above your normal maintenance range, does its work, and then settles back down over the following day.
Where the two terms actually diverge
If the chemistry is the same, why two names? It comes down to how you get there.
- "Shocking" almost always refers to adding a chemical product, typically liquid chlorine, granular cal-hypo, or dichlor, in a large single dose. It's the term you'll see on the bag at the pool store.
- "Superchlorination" is the more precise chemistry term for the process itself, and it's also the label many salt chlorinator systems use for a built-in feature (often called "Super Chlorinate" or "Boost") that runs the salt cell at full output for an extended period instead of its normal low daily setting.
- A traditional chlorine pool is almost always "shocked" with a product, since there's no cell to boost.
- A saltwater pool can be either "shocked" with an added chemical or "superchlorinated" through its own system, and owners sometimes do both when combined chlorine is stubbornly high.
Ballpark dosing, if you're shocking with a product
These are rule-of-thumb estimates, not precise math, and they assume a standard-strength product. Always check the concentration on your specific bottle or bag and retest after dosing rather than eyeballing it.

If your combined chlorine is reading 0.5 ppm, breakpoint chlorination calls for roughly 5 ppm of added free chlorine by the 10x rule, but most people just round up to a standard 10 ppm shock dose since it's a safer margin and cal-hypo and liquid chlorine are sold in fairly standard package sizes anyway. When to reach for either one
- Combined chlorine reads 0.5 ppm or higher on a test kit that measures it separately from free chlorine.
- The water has a strong "chlorine smell" or is causing eye and skin irritation, which is usually a chloramine problem, not an over-chlorination problem.
- You're opening the pool for the season and want to start with a clean slate.
- You've had unusually heavy bather load, like a pool party, or recent rain and debris.
- You're treating a mild algae bloom, where a shock-level dose is often the first step before adding an algaecide.
Note: After shocking or superchlorinating, keep swimmers out until free chlorine drops back to the normal maintenance range, generally under 4 ppm, which typically takes several hours to overnight depending on sunlight and pump run time. Cover any salt cell boost cycles that run overnight so you're not paying to superchlorinate water nobody's using yet.
Does it matter which term you use?
Not really, and that's the reassuring part. If a pool store clerk tells you to "shock it" and your salt system's manual tells you to "superchlorinate," they're pointing you toward the same outcome. The only genuinely useful distinction to keep in mind is mechanism, not vocabulary: a salt system's boost mode raises chlorine gradually over hours by running the cell harder, while a poured-in chemical dose raises it almost immediately. If you need chloramines gone fast, before a swim event tomorrow, a chemical shock usually gets there quicker. If you're just doing routine maintenance and have time, letting your salt system's boost cycle run overnight is often the simpler, lower-effort choice. Either way, log what you did and when, since a shock or superchlorinate event is exactly the kind of one-off entry that's easy to forget by the next time you're troubleshooting a cloudy or smelly pool and trying to remember what you last tried.
