Fiberglass and concrete pools share the same water-chemistry targets, but the surface underneath changes how algae takes hold, how you clean it, and how the pool ages. Here's what actually differs.

Fiberglass and concrete pools are held to the same water chemistry: the same pH, chlorine, and alkalinity targets apply no matter what the shell is made of. What changes is almost everything downstream of that chemistry, how easily algae gets a foothold, how you're supposed to clean the surface, and how the pool eventually shows its age. The ranges you're testing for don't move by surface type. pH 7.4-7.6, free chlorine 1-3 ppm, total alkalinity 80-120 ppm, calcium hardness 200-400 ppm, cyanuric acid 30-50 ppm: those numbers are the same whether you're maintaining a poured concrete shell finished in plaster or pebble, or a one-piece molded fiberglass shell finished in gelcoat. What changes is how the surface itself responds when water drifts outside those ranges, and how much routine physical upkeep the surface demands regardless of what your test strip says.

Fiberglass gives algae fewer places to grab hold

Plaster, pebble, and other cementitious finishes are porous at a microscopic level. That texture gives algae spores and bacteria something to anchor to, especially in low-flow spots like steps, corners, and behind ladders, which is a big reason plaster pools tend to need more consistent brushing to stay ahead of early growth. Fiberglass gelcoat is smooth and effectively non-porous, so algae has a much harder time establishing itself on the walls and floor in the first place.

  • Brushing is still worth doing on a fiberglass pool, mainly to keep debris and biofilm from settling, but a light weekly pass is usually enough instead of an aggressive scrub.

The single biggest rule: skip the stiff stainless-steel brushes and pumice stones that are standard tools for scrubbing stains off plaster. Both can scratch and permanently dull a gelcoat finish.

  • Use a soft nylon-bristle brush for routine cleaning, not a steel or metal-bristle brush.
  • For localized dirt or buildup, reach for a non-abrasive, fiberglass-safe cleaner rather than anything gritty.
  • Gelcoat can chalk or fade after years of sun and chemical exposure. Many fiberglass pool owners use a gelcoat reconditioning or wax-style product every couple of years to restore the shine, similar to boat gelcoat care.
  • Avoid letting concentrated chlorine tablets or granular shock sit directly against the surface undissolved. It's good practice on any pool, but a gelcoat finish tends to show localized bleaching faster than plaster does.

Calcium scale doesn't etch fiberglass gelcoat the way aggressive, low-calcium water can etch plaster, but it's still worth keeping calcium hardness in the 200-400 ppm ideal range (150-400 ppm acceptable). Scale that would blend into a textured plaster surface shows up clearly as a cloudy white or gray film on glossy gelcoat, and it's more work to strip back off without dulling the finish. Staying inside the normal range is the easiest way to avoid dealing with it at all.

Where the two surfaces genuinely diverge

Note: A fiberglass shell is lighter than concrete and isn't held in place by its own mass. Left empty, especially where groundwater is high, it can shift, crack, or even float up out of the ground. If a fiberglass pool genuinely needs to be drained, that's a job for a pool professional who can manage groundwater and structural risk, not a weekend project.

Resurfacing timelines: the biggest long-term difference

This is where the two pool types diverge most over a decade of ownership. Plaster, pebble, and aggregate finishes wear down gradually and are commonly resurfaced roughly every 10 to 20 years depending on water balance, usage, and finish type, a job that involves draining the pool and reapplying a new surface. Fiberglass gelcoat is molded as part of the shell rather than applied afterward, so it isn't resurfaced the same way; it typically just needs occasional reconditioning to keep its shine rather than a full replacement. That gap tends to show up later as a real budgeting line item, worth factoring into your cost of ownership if you're comparing pool types or thinking ahead to resale.
