Calcium Hardness Too Low: Why It Matters and How to Fix It
Low calcium hardness doesn't turn water green or cloudy, but it can slowly etch a plaster pool's surface. Here's how to spot it and correct it with calcium chloride.
If your last water test came back with calcium hardness under 150 ppm, it's easy to shrug off. A low reading doesn't turn the water green or make your eyes sting the way a chlorine problem does. But calcium hardness that stays too low for too long is one of the more expensive water-balance issues to ignore, especially if you have a plaster or pebble pool. Here's what's actually happening in the water, how to spot it, and how to raise it back into range without overshooting.
Why low calcium hardness is a bigger deal than it looks
Calcium hardness measures how much dissolved calcium is in your pool water. Water is always seeking chemical equilibrium, and when it's low in calcium, it becomes what pool professionals call "aggressive" or "corrosive": it starts pulling calcium from somewhere else to make up the difference. If you have a plaster, pebble, or other cementitious pool finish, that somewhere else is your pool's own surface. Over months and years, aggressive water slowly dissolves calcium out of the plaster itself, a process usually called etching. The surface roughens, loses its shine, and can start to feel chalky or pitted underfoot.
That makes low calcium hardness different from a lot of chemistry problems, which mostly affect how comfortable the water feels to swim in right now. Low hardness affects the pool's physical surface over time, and etched plaster generally means resurfacing, not just another round of chemicals.
What counts as too low
The ideal range for calcium hardness is 200-400 ppm, with 150-400 ppm as the outer acceptable band. Below 150 ppm, water starts trending aggressive; the further it drifts below 100 ppm, the more corrosive it becomes, and the more actively it pulls calcium from surfaces and metal equipment. A single low reading isn't an emergency, but a level that stays under 150 ppm for weeks at a time is worth acting on.
Signs your calcium hardness has drifted low
- Water that tests low on calcium hardness but otherwise looks completely normal. This is a chemistry problem you can't see, which is exactly why routine testing matters more than eyeballing the water.
- A plaster or pebble surface that feels rougher, chalkier, or duller than it used to, especially in high-flow areas like around return jets and steps.
- Faster-than-expected corrosion on metal ladders, handrails, light rings, or heater components.
- A recent partial drain-and-refill, heavy rain, or period of frequent backwashing, all common (and normal) causes of a sudden dip in hardness.
Risk by pool surface type
Not every pool is equally vulnerable. The surface material determines whether low calcium hardness is a structural concern or mostly an equipment-and-comfort issue.

What causes calcium hardness to drop
- Refilling or topping off with soft municipal water. Many municipal water supplies run naturally low in calcium, and hardness drifts down every time you add that water.
- Heavy rain diluting the pool, especially in an uncovered pool during a wet stretch.
- Backwashing a filter or draining part of the pool and refilling without rechecking hardness afterward.
- Running fill water through a home water softener, which is designed to remove calcium and will pull a pool's hardness down every time it's used to top off.
How to raise calcium hardness: calcium chloride dosing
Calcium hardness is one of the more straightforward numbers to correct. The standard product is calcium chloride, sold specifically as a pool hardness increaser. As a rule of thumb, about 1.25 lb of calcium chloride per 10,000 gallons of pool water raises calcium hardness by roughly 10 ppm, and that scales directly with pool size and how far you need to move the number. A 20,000-gallon pool that's 50 ppm low would need roughly ten times that reference dose. - Dissolve the calcium chloride in a bucket of water first (it generates heat as it dissolves), then pour it slowly around the pool's perimeter with the pump running.
- Add it gradually rather than as one large dose, especially if you're raising hardness by more than 30-40 ppm at once.
- Retest 24 hours later before adding more. Calcium chloride dissolves and circulates fairly quickly, but the water needs time to fully mix before a retest is accurate.
Note: Don't overshoot on purpose to build in a "buffer." Calcium hardness above 400 ppm brings its own problems, scale buildup on surfaces and inside equipment, cloudy water, and clogged heater elements, so the goal is landing inside the range, not maximizing it.
Keeping calcium hardness from drifting again
Once corrected, calcium hardness tends to be one of the more stable numbers in your pool. Unlike chlorine or cyanuric acid, it isn't consumed by sunlight or sanitizer, it mainly moves through dilution: rain, refills, and backwashing. Testing it monthly, and always after a significant water refill, is usually enough to catch a drift before it turns into a months-long low-CH stretch.
