Why Pools Turn Green After Heavy Rain
Heavy rain doesn't turn pool water green by itself, it dilutes your sanitizer and washes in the organic matter algae feeds on. Here's the mechanism and the rebalancing sequence that fixes it.
There's a specific kind of dread that comes with looking out at the pool the morning after a big storm and finding it's gone from blue to a hazy green-blue, or worse, fully green. It feels sudden, almost like the rain itself changed the water overnight. It didn't, not directly. Heavy rain doesn't turn water green on its own, it just knocks out the two things that were keeping algae in check: your sanitizer level and your water balance. Understanding what actually happened makes the fix a lot less overwhelming.
Why rain, specifically, triggers algae
Algae spores are in your pool water essentially all the time, blown in on the wind, carried on leaves, dropped in by birds. Under normal conditions, a properly maintained free chlorine level kills them before they can take hold. A heavy rain disrupts that balance in two separate ways at once: it dilutes the chemicals that are protecting the water, and it washes in a fresh supply of organic material and nutrients that algae feeds on. Either one alone is usually manageable. Both together, especially after a few inches of rain in a short window, is often enough to let algae get a foothold before you're even back outside to test the water.
Dilution: your chemistry gets watered down
Rainwater carries essentially no chlorine, no cyanuric acid, no calcium, and is often mildly acidic on its own. When a significant volume lands in the pool, or the pool overflows and gets partially replaced by runoff, it dilutes whatever chemistry you had dialed in. A pool that was sitting at 3 ppm free chlorine before the storm might be closer to 1 to 2 ppm afterward, not because the chlorine broke down, but because there's simply more water now carrying the same amount of it.
- Free chlorine drops in proportion to how much new water came in, leaving less sanitizer to fight off whatever the rain washed in with it.
- Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) drops too, and since CYA is what protects chlorine from being burned off by sunlight, a diluted CYA level makes whatever chlorine remains disappear even faster on the next sunny day.
- Total alkalinity and calcium hardness dilute as well, though they matter less urgently in the first day or two than chlorine and CYA do.
- pH can shift in either direction: mildly acidic rainwater can pull it down, while diluted total alkalinity means whatever buffering the water normally provides is weaker too.
Runoff: what the rain actually washes in
Rain doesn't just fall directly into the pool, it also runs off the yard, roof, and deck on its way there. That runoff carries exactly the kind of organic material and nutrients algae thrives on.
- Leaves, pollen, grass clippings, and dirt, all organic matter that breaks down and feeds algae and bacteria.
- Fertilizer and lawn treatment residue, which is often loaded with phosphates, a nutrient algae uses to grow.
- Bird droppings and general debris washed off the roof, screen enclosure, or deck.
- Silt and fine sediment, which clouds the water and makes it harder for chlorine to reach everything it needs to.
Note: Cloudy, rainy weather also means the water isn't getting the UV exposure that normally helps keep things in check, and it's easy to skip a day of testing when the weather is bad. That combination, diluted sanitizer, fresh organic material, and a missed test or two, is usually the real reason a pool goes from clear to green within a day or two of a storm.

Rebalancing after a heavy rain
The good news is that a rain-triggered green pool usually responds well to a fairly standard sequence, it just needs to happen in the right order. Jumping straight to shocking without checking pH and alkalinity first tends to waste chlorine fighting water that's working against you.
- Skim off any floating leaves and debris first. Less organic material in the water means the sanitizer you add spends its energy fighting algae, not leaves.
- Test the water rather than guessing, especially after a big shift: pH, free chlorine, combined chlorine, total alkalinity, and cyanuric acid all matter here.
- Bring total alkalinity back toward the 60-120 ppm acceptable range before worrying too much about pH, since alkalinity acts as a buffer that stabilizes everything that follows. Skimmer's total alkalinity calculator can work out how much baking soda to add.
- Shock the pool. Many pool professionals shock to roughly 10 ppm free chlorine, or ten times whatever the combined chlorine reading shows, whichever is higher. - Retest cyanuric acid once the water clears. If it dropped below the 20-80 ppm acceptable range, add stabilizer to bring it back: roughly 13 oz of stabilizer per 10,000 gallons raises CYA by about 10 ppm, though it dissolves slowly, so give it several days before retesting. You can't stop it from raining, but a few habits make the next heavy storm far less likely to turn the pool green.
- Test the water as soon as it's safe to get back outside after a big storm, rather than waiting for the next scheduled test day.
- If you use a pool cover, skim off any standing water or debris that collected on top before removing it, so it doesn't end up in the pool.
- Check the skimmer basket after a storm. It fills up fast with the debris a heavy rain washes toward the water.
- If your area gets frequent summer storms, consider keeping free chlorine toward the higher end of the acceptable range, up to 4 ppm, during stormy stretches, so there's more of a buffer before dilution pulls it below an effective level.
